It was already well into its second wave by the 1990s, though? Emo started as an offshoot of the DC hardcore scene in the mid-’80s. (This is strictly as a music genre, though. Emo didn’t gain a distinct sartorial style until the 2000s, and if I recall LiveJournal, the look was called “scene” then.)

(Like, Klob will never be an active advocate for trans rights. BUT we can push her to accept that the status quo in Minnesota includes a significant amount of trans people who vote. Demuth actively wants trans people not to exist. Neither is an ally, but fighting Klob will suck a lot less.)

I also spent an entire week going through hundreds of O rings that had been tossed into random containers over the years, cleaning each one with alcohol and/or acetone, and sorting them by size and thickness, so, you know, it wasn’t all glamour. Gave myself a 220V AC shock once out of clumsiness.

I spent a few summers working as a lab grunt (NOT a Research Experience for Undergrads thing) at a nuclear accelerator lab. A typical task was leak-chasing beam lines under ultra-high vacuum: go around all the seals with a trickle of helium gas, and tighten the connections if the pumps got louder.
