However, facial reconstructions tend to generate plenty of press & public discussion, which can raise the profile of lesser-known historic sites and promote awareness of archaeological science! They are popular in exhibitions as an engagement tool because of their strong affective quality.

That's a great question! There does not seem to be much quantitative analysis of engagement metrics per se, but there is a body of work on the various pros, cons, and ethical considerations behind facial reconstruction more generally.

An incredible example of how heritage science can help us connect with history in a very tangible way. Osteological analysis, aDNA, isotope analysis, and digital facial reconstruction let us look the past in the eyes, which has massive potential for facilitating public engagement with archaeology!
