Issue 52 of the Newsberg Little Print Newsletter publishing today. A full year of designing, printing, and distributing this little, physical newspaper week in and week out. Crazy. #independentjournalism #localjournalism #newbergoregon

Maybe some of the most difficult lighting conditions for a #photographer, but I was able to open the aperture to 1.4 and get some level of consistent detail from a distance. ISO may or may not have been at 2000-2500. #photojournalism Story: newsberg.org/2026/08/10/u...

From a conglomerate-owned paper. So much of this makes my skin crawl. Not only are they using AI when they have designers on staff, but also the whole poster is so horribly vague. They didn't even take the time to regionalize or localize it. Clearly sent out to the 250+ outlets unchanged. Yuck.

Listen, the job doesn’t pay well. But I get to test silly ideas in #newbergoregon and that’s pretty valuable to me. Newsberg.org/the-logoff

From an official government agency. What happened to professionalism? Call me crazy but I also feel like a citizen should not need to use a social media platform, especially considering rampant misinformation, to get updates from their agencies.

Love this community. In the newsletter intro, I talked about how I was sick for almost the entire month of February. This was one reader's response:

Let me tell ya: one of the best parts of the new printed Newsberg paper is hand delivering them around town. Sure it takes some time, and sometimes you’re roped into long chats. But the community connection is just…awesome. #newbergoregon #independentjournalism

This part in particular is…insane. Pretending like already strapped reporters can do any meaningful reporting if they’re forced to publish two to three stories per day? It’s just going to be a click bait outlet with no substance. Really unfortunate.

Sometimes you get a wild hair to make something and weirdly you’ve got a bit of bandwidth to get it done. Stoked about these little Newsberg info zines! Shout out @klaszus.bsky.social leading the way on the news zine game. #localjournalism #localnews

This job is stinking cool and I’m always reminded of that. Today I got to head out to a horse rescue/rehab and spend some time in the field learning about a few passionate people who work to give neglected horses a new home. Absolutely recharged when I get into the field.

Oregon state legislature is currently discussing senate bill 686, which would require some tech platforms to pay news outlets in Oregon. Senator Pham is leading the charge.

From a New York Times article in 2010, which I just learned galvanized locals to get involved and work to improve the town. Crazy what one published line can do to an entire community. #newbergoregon
A clip from the New York Times says: "LOCATION: The Allison is on the outskirts of Newberg, a drab suburb of Portland and the gateway to Oregon Wine Country. There are some 200 wineries within 20 minutes of the hotel."

Being in community media means sometimes you get to document some really heartwarming things. Several woman-owned downtown business owners reached out to see if I’d take photos for #internationalwomensday. Warmed my heart to see all these awesome community pillars come together in celebration 💗

I’ve decided more adults should play on swings every once in a while. Such a simple way to find a little joy.

My current read is Fire at Eden’s Gate (from the Newberg Public Library of course). An absolutely fascinating biography about former Oregon Governor Tom McCall. If you are an Oregonian looking to understand more about our state, I could not recommend it more.

I keep forgetting that being a start up independent publisher means I can test the waters in whatever way makes sense, including releasing a physical newsletter on 8.5x11 printer paper (affordable) instead of printing a whole newspaper (expensive). Maybe even make a zine…who knows?!

The 2024 Newsberg Coloring Book is out in the wild! 24 pages of unique thick-lined illustrations created by a local artist all related to Newsberg’s top stories from the last year. Let’s see how they do! #newbergoregon

The story that keeps on giving. I followed up with Nolan, the hobby bigleaf maple sugar maker in Champoeg, who is working with Eric Jones from Oregon State University to streamline processes and increase production. Can’t wait to see where this goes.

Scrambled up north to Portland State University to attend the SPJ Oregon “Building a Better Journalist” conference. Not sure how long I’ll make it inside when the air is this crisp and the PSU Farmers Market is right outside.

Had a great chat with Eric and Lindsay from Jem 100 this morning. Learned all about their plans for the classic Newberg burger joint since buying the business from Tom and Linda (Lindsay’s parents) earlier this year. Story coming to newsberg.org and the newsletter next week!
