It’s awkward that the terms we have are “homophobia” and “Islamophobia”, when what one wants to convey hate-filled discrimination. I wouldn’t care if they were merely afraid.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the extraordinary history, cultures, and contributions of Native communities across our nation. We must also acknowledge the injustices they have endured—and continue to face—and do the work of pursuing real justice.

Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!

This strikes me as a profoundly bad idea. Why would anyone want to intentionally cause an epistemic collapse in our system of knowledge? Just to, what, grind out more papers even fewer people will read and evaluate? I don’t get it.

If you are an academic who uses arXiv, please consider signing this. **Give Authors Control: Let Us Decide If AI Bots Can Read Our arXiv Papers** math.mit.edu/~elmos/petit...
Currently, authors posting to arXiv have no control over whether bots scrape their full-text PDFs and LaTeX source files.

We are calling on arXiv to implement a simple permission toggle during submission, allowing authors to decide what automated scrapers can access:

Full Access: Bots can read and scrape the full text and source files.

Metadata Only: Bots are restricted to the Title, Abstract, and Citation metadata.

Open science for human readers should not mean mandatory, unconsented data harvesting by commercial entities. Advancing scientific knowledge demands immense time, resources, and intellectual rigor — we deserve a say in whether our original work is fed into massive, opaque training sets.

In my somewhat parochial opinion, which reflects my education in the late 1990s, one of the failures of philosophy has been to bring back consciousness to the scene, while cog sci had usefully marginalized it. Back then polite people didn’t use the C word.

I got Gettiered
Last week, I encountered a Gettier case in the wild. Edmund Gettier wrote a very short paper in 1963 arguing against the plausible idea that knowledge is justified true belief. He provides two cases where someone has a justified true belief which doesn't count as knowledge. His examples are somewhat contrived, but they suffice to make the point.

How quickly it fades
I am teaching Philosophy and Cover Songs as a first-year seminar this semester, and I worry that I don't have any contemporary examples. It's weird, because I had lots of contemporary examples when taught Philosophy and Popular Music a year and a half ago. New covers of Chappell Roan's "Good Luck Babe" (itself just a year old) provided vivid examples of the way gender and meaning interact.

Two small updates recently: Posted a slightly revised version of my paper on covers for a contemporary debates volume. My paper with Ron McClamrock on collapse phenomena in musical experience has been accepted at the Journal of Aesthetic Education. We're told that it won't appear in an issue until probably 2028 or '29, but the draft is available now.

AI alignment is the project of making AI so that it won't kill us or sell us out. A naïve conception adds a constitution or statement of principles, basically one more document to start the prompt for an LLM's linguistic riffing. That makes the mistake of thinking that the danger is superintelligent or rogue AI, as if the AI are people need to be raised to know the difference between right and wrong.

In contemporary music, the recorded track is the musical object that listeners encounter the most. Some philosophers, like Theodore Gracyk and Andrew Kania, have taken this to mean that the track is the work of art in contemporary music. Evidence for this is the importance that many musicians put on production of the track. So much so that producers become important contributors to the musical product.
