The Council has posted a page with its plans for the #Greenway diversion via Plaistow Road, along with a timetable: starting the southern section early next year, finishing by Autumn. We support this scheme & want it to be accelerated wherever possible. newhamco-create.co.uk/en/projects/...
Diagram showing a redesign of Plaistow Road in Newham, with a 2-way cycleway on the north side. The footways and cycleways are continuous with Dutch entry kerbs over the junctions of Church Street, Stephens Road, and Plaistow Grove. A new straight-across parallel zebra and cycle crossing just east of Stephens Road makes it possible to cross Plaistow Road. The junction mouth of Church Street is narrowed significantly. A traffic island in the centre of the road is removed. On the north side, the cycleway runs behind a bus stop, with the boarding island reachable by a zebra crossing.

Construction at Water Lane is finally fully complete! The parallel pedestrian and cycle crossing is now on a raised table—so drivers will have to slow down, and will hopefully give way to pedestrians and cyclists (as they should.) A big improvement from the dangerous dogleg that was there before 👏
A diagonal parallel zebra and cycle crossing with priority over a road connecting pavements and cycle tracks on both sides. The crossing is on a raised table with chevrons indicating the changing gradient. It is flat for pedestrians and cyclists, but drivers have to navigate a speed hump. The pavements is made up of subtle colourful patterns of brick: buff, yellow, red, brown.

🔍 We were pleased to lead six councillors from across Newham's political spectrum (+1 councillor acting as a marshal) for a Cycling Infrastructure Safari, to see some of the best (and worst) cycling in Newham has to offer. There are some things you don't realise unless you see them from the saddle!

We're pleased to see this interim scheme and will be responding positively to the traffic order when it is published. Let's hope this momentum continues for a permanent solution for Stratford High Street, including adding protection to the other dangerous junctions at Warton and Carpenters Road.

For cycling this will include 🚲 Wands to separate the cycle lane from the bus lane—and reduce the kind of interaction you see in the video 🚲 New bus stop bypass at the one place missing one, to keep buses (& bus users) separate from those cycling 🚲 Removal of traffic lights at Marshgate Lane

Very exciting news: A trial section of the future Stratford High Street bus priority scheme is now under construction, for the eastbound section of High Street from Bow Roundabout to Marshgate Lane. Aside from a new bus lane, this will introduce a number of improvements for cycling.

Unprotected bus stops lead to dangerous crush movements, even if everyone is careful & follows the rules. This leads to people cycling aggressively (jumping reds) or cycling on the pavement. Well designed floating bus stops make near misses & crashes between buses and cyclists almost impossible.

It shouldn't be remarkable, but we really appreciate it when construction teams make it safe & comfortable to cycle & walk past their worksites without a "Cyclists Dismount" in sight. This example from McAleer & Rush on Stratford High Street is great! Certain utilities firms could learn a thing or 👀
A gantry of scaffolding over a footway and a separated cycleway, next to construction hoardings. The gantry is sheltered, lit inside, and has signs above marking "Pedestrians" and "Cycle Lane", and HERAS fencing provides additional protection to the cycleway. Someone cycles along the cycle lane in safety without having to dismount or merge with traffic.

Bus lanes are not safe cycling infra, because buses have to pull in front of those cycling. Dangerous & stressful even when everyone is careful & follows the rules. Protected cycleways with floating bus stops make this kind of near miss impossible. (Video from Old Street—thankfully not in Newham!)

Some of you might recall that Newham Council’s original plan for a Thames Water Greenway diversion was to close Abbey Road to traffic—but they chickened out after an objection from the Police about displacing traffic to West Ham Lane. Let’s see how that’s going 🤔 #GreenwayFlushedAway

More infra news, and it’s great news: Woodgrange Junction on Romford Road is out for statutory consultation & work should start soon! This will be Newham’s FIRST Dutch style protected crossroads! We can’t wait. See full plans here: drive.google.com/file/d/1ZfDX...

The amazing #WestfieldAvenue cycleway this evening—great to look at, even better to ride. And the people we saw cycling on it seem to agree! Shouldn't cycling be this good everywhere and for everyone in Newham? #StreetsForCycling
A one-way cycle track crossing a shiny smooth carriageway, with a low-level cycle specific traffic light, on red, keeping you safe from the cars using the road. Meanwhile the cycle crossing joins a two-way cycle track lined with trees and hedges. The sky is blue and it's a lovely day for a bike ride.

Detailed design drawings for with-flow protected cycle tracks on a 3-lane road, with 1 eastbound car lane, 1 westbound car lane and 1 westbound bus lane. The cycle tracks are continuous and in a straight line. The side road junctions at Rosedale Road and Birchdale Road are continuous pavements, where the cycleway and footway are continuous and on humps with no tactile markings, instead with clear priority for pedestrians and cyclists with drivers required to give way.Continuation of the same road from the first picture, with the cycleways and pavement still continuous over side roads at Nigel Road and Quakers Place. The cycle track bends inward to pass behind a bus stop on the south side of the road. The bus stop island is accessed using a zebra crossing.More continuation of the drawing from the previous image, this time running to the extent of this section of works just east of Shrewsbury Road. The Shrewsbury Road side road junction is also continuous. There is another bus stop bypass on the north side. There is a long zebra crossing on a raised table over both the cycleways and carriageway just east of Shrewsbury Road. There is a small rain garden on the bus stop island.

#ThamesWater claim all the diversions on their map are "suitable for pedestrians and cyclists." We disagree—we know of at least 3 injuries on the Abbey Rd diversion, including one person whose foot was run over as he waited at the lights. The West Ham Ln route is also dangerous. #GreenwayFlushedAway
Laminated map of diversions for the closed section of the Greenway. One is Abbey Road-Richardson Road-Pond Road (listed as the 'south-bound' diversion.) One is West Ham Lane-Plaistow Road-Upper Road (listed as northbound.) Mitre Road is listed as a connection.

There is also a claim: "All above diversion routes are suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. Lane restrictions in place for Manor Road bridge. Cyclists must obey traffic signals in place."

That design is a little out of date, but yes, the intention is a camera-enforced bus gate (the ETMO says in both directions.) Outbound traffic will be less of a concern to us once Olympic Park Ave goes one way as part of Westfield Ave scheme, but better for the filter to be 2-way for consistency!
