Fun fact: I used two different ring modulator instances on Lara’s chopped up vocal and blended between them with automation. I rarely use ring modulation because it flat out sounds weird, but that’s exactly why I used it to make one of many vocal layers sound less like a vocal.

The song was originally written as one guitar part and one vocal. WENT A BIT OFF TRACK. I recorded the vocals against the guitar to stay vaguely in tune, then dumped it 🗑️

There are 16 vocal parts. I created two of them from interim breaths, either played normally or in reverse. The percussive thud comes from James @mountainsize.bsky.social boosting the low frequencies in these tracks. Key lyric: "Yes it hurts to talk about it Who might you have been without it?"

The moth represents the human brain involuntarily poking at past traumas (the flame). That gnarly opening group harmony on 'These users' originally appeared only at the end. I copied it over to the beginning as it's cool and I wasn't sure anyone would listen to the end and catch it😀

The happy accident of that manual choppy stutter effect is that it mirrors the lyrical lines about the moth flying near the flame. I like to think it suggests the flutter of wings while trying not to get burned.

There is probably a really easy 2-second method of achieving this effect. But being who I am, I decided to manually chop up bits of my vocal as it wavered between two notes to make this a background feature that comes in and out. I like to think it sounds more 'chosen' than an automated version.
