This lawsuit is brutal. One of the exhibits is the letter Universal sent to Midjourney, including a quote from a 2022 Forbes interview that I bet midjourney regrets

Universal did not permit, authorize, or license Midjourney to copy or use any of Universal's copyrighted works in connection with any version of its Image Service or to otherwise exploit Universal's works at any time. You acknowledged as much in a September 16, 2022 Forbes interview in which you confirmed that Midjourney never sought any copyright holders' consent to use or exploit their works:
Did you seek consent from living artists or work still under copyright?
No. There isn't really a way to get a hundred million images and know where they're coming from. It would be cool if images had metadata embedded in them about the copyright owner or something. But that's not a thing; there's not a registry. There's no way to find a picture on the Internet, and then automatically trace it to an owner and then have any way of doing anything to authenticate it.

My painting WISCONSIN FARM

An acrylic painting by Jim Musil depicting a farm in Wisconsin. A red barn sits at the end of a dirt road in the middle of a verdant green field. A colorful sky dominates the composition.

Sometimes ppl ask why I don’t draw much straight historical smut. Well I think women had a hard enough time in the Middle Ages. Now if it’s a male emperor, general or religious leader having his ego crushed and tortured until he cries for his crimes that’s pretty satisfying

I’m sure you’ve all seen it, but the Hugh Jackman in men’s vs women’s magazines meme is instructive

On the left: Hugh Jackman as Wolverine on the cover of Muscle & Fitness. He is shirtless, veiny, ripped, scowling, with big Wolverine claws. Cover line is “Get ripped in just 20 minutes.”
On the right: Hugh Jackman on the cover of Good Housekeeping. He is smiling and wearing a nice blue sweater. He has a slim athletic physique, but you wouldn’t call it built. Cover line: “Hugh Jackman’s recipe for romance: what keeps his marriage rock solid.”

This is such a good piece and such an interesting phenomenon. He looks healthy & happy in both pics, and it’s his body to wear how he likes. But it doesn’t surprise me at all that the male gaze and female gaze diverge so sharply on which photo is more appealing.

People are not obliged to care about whether or not their looks are appealing to mainstream heterosexuals. This guy might just enjoy his body like this! Good for him! What’s notable in the piece, though, is how angry some men get when most heterosexual women don’t accept their judgment, & why.

All of this immediately becomes a problem when men who don’t give much thought to the female imagination and female desire - because they are not remotely socialized to do so - are suddenly presented with the truth in an online poll and begin to freak out about it.

The famous green owl app Duolingo is going even harder into AI made by stolen content. It's not curated by native speakers so you have no idea if what you're learning is correct. Their algorithm overall tries to hit the happy brain juices instead of helping you learn. So here are some alternatives!

It took me a very long time to learn "do your best" does not mean "give 100% effort even at the expense of your physical or mental health" or "give A+ effort even when it is clearly not appreciated or valued". Sometimes doing your best is heating up a can of soup and going to bed early.
