Closing thoughts: I can see why this might be handy if you are tracking your own goals but nothing more. I have to assume that this feature is rolled out in good faith. I’m not sure how the information tracked can be used, especially if this is touted as an anti AI measure. It shouldn’t be.

In emboss’s case: 1) Who’s stopping someone accusing an ellipsus user and asking for their nonAI writing proof? The user might not have a + version, and then gets accused of AI usage? Then what? You will have failed to protect those users.

Another example would be scrivener’s word tracking feature in their app. It tracks word goals in one draft binder. You can even export it to an excel sheet to track your word goals. But if you copy and paste from one document to another document, that completely skews the data. So that’s moot.

Not everyone can afford a PC that can support this screen recording feature. Artists should not be expected to record themselves in the process to verify their own humanity. To expect this sort of proof is insane. Once you remove good faith everyone’s work might as well be AI. Thats a crazy take.

This can be used for working in a piece and gauging roughly how long it took for the person to make a piece. But this type of recording and tracking still has its own flaw. It’s not the end all the all of a creation process and it shouldn’t be treated that way. I mean there are ways to fake this.

An example feature I can immediately think about is clip studio paint’s work time feature. The one that requires how many brush strokes you’ve taken how many hours you’ve worked on the art piece. It also offers screen recording, if your computer support it.

It’s a rabbit hole once you start there’s no way to get out.

I’m thinking for the benefit of the doubt also how this feature could be used. And I can see that it might be helpful for people to track their own progress — perhaps for work, perhaps for themselves. But the fact of the matter is that this feature can be taken as a false verification tool.

To reiterate: I’m sure there’s other people making better points on this issue. But if this is the way ellipsus goes, I’ll switch up most of my existing writing processes to something else. Nothing good comes out of surveillance. This is just disappointing and foul.

Paid features is an understandable thing. I’m all for that if it keeps the service free for those who can’t pay. The money has got to come from somewhere to upkeep the website service + wages. That part is more than reasonable. But doing it like this really goes against ellipsus’s no AI philosophy.

Listen, we’re not in grade school/primary school, so why must we be graded on our writing processors like some sort of class? Why must I prove myself human, when I already am? This is just adding another friction point to those AI witch hunts.

Yes this Emboss feature is a tool, but its a tool that I can see getting misused by bad actors… which will only lead to more witch hunts. It also seems counterproductive since this probably means training data sets on the creator’s own writing processes. That’s…. Not reassuring at all.

I’m sure that many people have complained about this already but, wasn’t the whole entire point about moving to ellipsus about how ‘writers didn’t want surveillance features from their writing processors?’ This seems like a step backwards - even if this was done with good intentions.
