The results are in: we have a clear mandate to strike. More than 90% of you who voted in our ballot, voted YES. You’ve made it clear: enough is enough. Our fight for full #PayRestoration for resident doctors in England continues. www.bma.org.uk/our-campaign...

Had such a difficult week - had to have my boy cat put to sleep due to a very aggressive facial tumour. He had a great 15 years though 💔

A feminist psychiatry
During the 1980s in some health-care settings in the UK an acronym started appearing in medical notes, or rather, in women's medical notes: TATT CC AAO. Many doctors were trying to get the “tired all the time, can’t cope, aching all over” patients out of their consulting rooms as quickly as possible. This shorthand betrayed the medical system's bias and a hubristic resistance to engage with these patients’ symptoms. The overlap of exhaustion, pain, and distress still leaves women vulnerable to different, and inadequate, care.

Also, your "agitated" patient. Are they delirious due to infection, or are they in pain and unable to communicate it clearly? Give simple analgesia if they haven't had any before running to sedatives. Analgesia FIRST. Always. #MedSky

GMC Workforce Report Some of the most challenging aspects of this report are the low numbers of Doctors completing Foundation Year 2 who enter directly into training programs, now representing just 1 in 4 (25%) down from 2 in 3 (67%) in 2012. www.gmc-uk.org/news/news-ar...

A new study in PNAS (N>20k) confirms women’s pain is taken less seriously than that of men, with women being less likely to receive pain meds and waiting 30 minutes longer to be seen in the ED. Sadly, the same reasons we treat women poorly in our society translate to how we treat women patients.
Figure with three panels showing 1) % of patients receiving analgesics by age group with bars for male and female patients within each age group (at every age, female patients are less likely to receive analgesics); 2) % of patients receiving analgesics based on pain score, with one line for female patients and another for male patients. At every pain level, female patients are less likely than male patients to receive analgesics; 3) % receiving analgesics by physician sex, shows that male patients are more likely to receive analgesics from both male and female physicians Figure with 3 panels, showing 1) % of patients receiving any analgesic, grouped by pain score—female patients are less likely to receive analgesics than male patients at every level of pain; 2) % of patients receiving opioids by pain score—female patients are less likely to receive opioids than male patients at every pain level aside from “mild pain”; 3) % of patients receiving non-opioid analgesics—female patients are less likely to receive these than male patients if pain is not recorded or they have severe pain

Belonging. Inclusion. What does that mean in practice? It’s including people of different background in your conversations. It’s not judging on skin colour, hair, ability, accent & assuming this person is ‘less than’ your expectation. It’s a welcome, a smile, a how are you? Not who or what are you.

Almost all mental health problems and mental illnesses are more common in autistic people than in the general population. This new publication by R . C . Psychiatry is an excellent resource for information and practical matters surrounding autism and mental health www.rcpsych.ac.uk/mental-healt...

Finally saw the comet last night. Not a great picture but I couldn’t see the comet was there until I took it the photo and then the clouds came over shortly after and it was out of sight again! I was expecting something much bigger and brighter…. still super excited though

Experienced #MedEd peeps… how common is it to make mistakes when teaching? I’ve made a couple, frustratingly getting confused with things I know. As an anxious, perfectionist type I’m feeling quite worried about it. Any advice?

My dad had an appointment with a neurosurgeon today…. Bit of a last minute appointment and they forgot to tell him where to go. Sounds like he used his initiative, followed signs for neurosurgery and ended up in the theatre corridor 😮🫣

Good riddance to the term ‘junior doctor’! I wouldn’t mind some recognition that not all resident doctors are “young” though - *some* of us are older than the *some* of the consultants 😂 - maybe focus on experience as a doctor rather than age… thedoctor.bma.org.uk/articles/com...

Clearly the government need to look carefully at their calculations for the winter fuel allowance - some pensioners, like my dad, gave it to charity as they didn’t need it, but I’ve met others who are worried they won’t cope without it.
