The House just passed its budget resolution, so reconciliation is now officially underway. This is their bill to destroy Medicaid and SNAP while cutting taxes disproportionately for the rich. THIS IS VERY REAL and can be enacted even if all Ds vote no. Thread on what's to come and WHERE TO FIGHT.

They did pull a bunch of grants from the university already. You should read what the Princeton president wrote about the attack on universities.

Academic Skyers: I am compiling a list of policies and statements from various universities about how they are handling the "pause" in terms of stopping expenditures (or not). Please respond to this post with your institution and materials. THANK YOU!

Our cat has a bad upper respiratory infection. Indoor cat, no other pets. Spouse and I both had upper respiratory infections that lasted a month, just now recovered. Vet is skeptical, says human-cat transmission is unlikely. Really? Virus folks?

Also measles is crazy contagious. A person with the flu infects ~1-2 other people, COVID ~2-3. Measles? ~12-18.

I was vaccinated in the 70s and again in the 80s and had no detectable titer in 2019. We don’t have a lot of data on how long vaccine immunity lasts, but it’s not crazy to imagine that “your whole life” is more than can be promised for 1-2 injections.

There is only one student doing this and they are verifiably very ill. So this seems less likely, though not impossible.

So…a student is taking pictures of the final exam with their phone. Is this step one of chatGPT telling them the answers? Or are they just memorializing my incredible work as an exam-writer?

No, just one I found guiding a wildlife walk. I did raise some from eggs that were going to be destroyed because of where they were laid. I released them all.

A fist-sized Northern Saw-Whet owl that has just been banded, held by the talons by a field biologist. Its pupils are large and black, and its irises are yellow. It is staring directly at the camera. Its gaze bores into your soul.

Cool owl fact I learned this week: for many species, their feathers contain porphyrin, which glows under UV light. The porphyrin fades over time, so the amount and pattern of glow can help determine their age. Also the glow is brightest in places on the owl where the sun don't shine.
A Northern Saw-Whet owl, about the size of a stick of butter, being held by a field biologist participating in a licensed bird banding program. The owl's right wing is extended and is illuminated with UV light, revealing a wide area of bright hot pink fluorescence, which indicates this is a hatch year bird.

We live in suburban NJ and don’t see many bears, but few years ago I was on the phone in the living room and a juvenile black bear rubbed his flank against the picture window two feet away. All I could do was go “Bear! Bear!”. Person on the phone was confused.
