Today's highly fragrant rose is 'Desdemona' (David Austin, 2015). White to blush pink globular blooms with a strong lemony perfume. Supposed to grow to 4ft but mine is 6-7ft & I love it. Blooming away today in a stiff northerly breeze 🌹🌱 #Roses

Quite. I thought the ball was dead after the clock ticked over 80. It was a bit embarrasing after that but I suppose a win is a win.

Day 9 of #31DaysOfGraves - Lettering If you are ever having trouble reading an historic gravestone you will be absolutely amazed what a night-time visit and a torch held at a raked angle will reveal! 🪦🔦 This beautiful example is in Stenton Kirkyard in East Lothian.

Delivery from Lincolnshire Smokehouse - very much looking forward to trying some tasty bbq meat. Tonight I am having beef (brisket) burnt ends. Hope they'll be as good as they look 😋 lincolnshiresmokehouse.co.uk

41 pints of bottled tomatoes (18 quarts & 5 pint jars) & 7 pint jars of tomato jam heading to the pantry to join a few jars from last year. Not bad for the cost of a few seeds 🍅🍅🍅🌱

Two gorgeous fragrant shrub roses bred by the very talented but gone too soon Amanda Beales catching the sunlight on a cool morning. Creamy white 'Nelson's Pride' (2005) & light pink St Ethelburga (2006), the latter named for the church in Bishopsgate London #Roses 🌹 🌱

Sunset view. Much cooler after the rain cleared away so I had to dig out my gansey for the first time since spring. Owls in good voice tonight along with the occasional skein of geese.

For #RoseWednesday🌹 a few from my garden just before the rain arrived: Tea-Noisette 'Céline Forestiere' (Trouillard, 1842); Hybrid Tea 'Lady Mary Fitzwilliam' (Bennett, 1880); Hybrid Perpetual 'John Hopper' (Ward, 1860); & Bourbon 'Souvenir de La Malmaison' (Beluze, 1843). #Roses 🌱

Another half a bucket of sweet peppers & chillies harvested today. I feel a third batch of hot pepper jelly is required. As the forecast for tomorrow is for several hours of rain I forsee chopping on the cards. This time in addition to apple I may add some quince for floral note

My late sown French bush beans (sown 21st July) are producing fabulous dinners at the moment with enough to freeze to eat with winter roasts. These are a mix of Safari & Annabel & I am delighted with them. 🌱

Today's apple is dual purpose Newton Wonder. Discovered c 1870 by innkeeper Mr Taylor growing in the hedge near The Hardinge Arms, King's Newton, Derbyshire. Transplanted into his garden; the original tree survived until 1940. Crisp & fruity dessert apple. Cooks to creamy purée. 🍎🍏

such a lovely flavour. My tree didn't fruit this year but I have been enjoying Barnack Orange apples 😋

Chilly. Sweet peas don't care. They are still flowering away though I will start collecting the seeds now. Apple jam on the cards today with some lovely sweet crab apples that I planted in a mixed hedgerow some years ago. Trying to make the most of the autumn bounty

Another day ending as I wait for midnight to chime. A cool night; even the cats are all inside asleep, a sure sign that autumn is tightening its grip. No owls screeching outside yet but a Muntjac has been barking for a while. Cold enough to pull the window to & keep the damp out

A quiet morning after unexpected rain. Blue Tits are happily pulling the seeds out of my sunflowers (I have already saved a head for sowing next year). The primroses are back flowering having not enjoyed the drought. A day to pick apples & mow paths through the long orchard grass

Twilight. Pink & peach wispy clouds fading to grey. The feral cat & her kittens are busy playing in the orchard barn as darkness falls; all of the catnip mice I have left for them have disappeared amongst the hay bales somewhere. Still, better than real mice!

A year or so ago I made some candied halved kumquats which were stored in their own syrup & water-bath canned. Today I chopped a few & added them into a cake. May I recommend it as delicious? I also have candied limequats to try. Will definately make more candied fruit this year

Rose of The Year 2025🏆 'You're My Everything' still blooming away. An Hybrid Tea from Weeks Roses in the US it has clotted cream centre fringed with bright candyfloss pink. A nice fruity fragrance & robust, healthy growth. One of the most productive roses in my garden. 4ft 🌹 #Roses 🌱

Before I get to the end of this year's tomatoes I need to make tomato jam for savoury jam tarts. It is fabulous! 6lb (3kg) ripe tomatoes, 10 Tbs lemon juice, rind 2 lemons, 5lb (2.5kg) preserving sugar, 8oz (250g) ginger in syrup drained & chopped. Make into jam in usual way 🍅😋 🍽 #HomeCooking

Look at my homegrown melons! These are 'Petit Gris de Rennes', a small hierloom Breton Charentais variety cultivated in the gardens of the Bishop of Rennes c 1636. Small with grey-green skin the flesh is orange, juicy & very sweet. I have just eaten one for lunch 😋

Bramley's Seedling apples picked this morning. Peeled, cored & chopped. I am making apple sauce with them to eat alongside pork roasts, chops, sausages etc. Will be steam canned in pint jars along with some lemon juice. 🍏🍏🍏
