Well, I started trying to make transitions through doors better and a few hours later I wound up with a rudimentary framework to control the player during cutscenes. I'm sure it's terribly implemented, but it does mean I can send sets of commands rather than manually calling individual functions.

Some folks online appear to be putting up videos to show how the Wolverine game is too easy and handholding. Some of these videos are, only after they have gone viral, being discovered to have been recorded on the easiest difficulty with (off by default) accessibility settings turned on.

I got myself so worked up ranting to myself about how people don't understand game development, then I opened up the gamedev feed and saw a few AI bros reconstructing in-game hint systems from first principles because they thought an LLM could do it. I'm not mad anymore, I just need to go lie down.

I'm starting to think there's just a cultural blind spot about how bad hotels and fast food places were; everyone whines and complains about the "cOrPoRaTe aEsThEtIc" and I just sit there going "this neither looks nor smells like a gangrenous wound, and that is (shockingly) a marked improvement".

Swapping out my homemade dialog system with a professionally-made plugin was a pain, but I THINK it's worth it? Less spaghetti, and actually respects conditions and event triggers. I do wish it hadn't been so expensive. Technically it was open source, but it wouldn't compile for the engine version.

Today marks the second time I have seen an absolutely dogshit media illiterate take coupled to a comparison between RWBY and Honkai Star Rail. The first was complaining about RWBY and the second about HSR, so it's not people being critical of one over the other, it's just weird it happened twice.

"Other than the stuff that interested me, it didn't interest me" "Other than the stuff that didn't interest me, it interested me" There, you have now seen literally every social media post about Gamescon, congrats, you've done it, you may now go back to enjoying things like a normal person.

I feel like I've blocked and reported more AI bros and spam bots just browsing the #gamedev feed than I've blocked on any other social media site. Which isn't true, if my actual blocklist is to be trusted, but it really does feel that way.

I got a big rant incoming that I'm sure is completely irrelevant to anything, but I'm getting it off my chest:

A lot of the people complaining about the content of modern video games have never scrolled past the first page on Steam and it shows. Boy howdy, does it show.

I'm drafting a shop background. In terms of quality...I think it's pretty good for literally my first draft. I'm glad the idea I had is feasible; I'm not good at pixel art or digital art, so an edited 3D render is what I have to work with. Definitely not satisfied with it, though. #gamedev

This has been happening a lot lately so I'm just gonna express my thoughts: this is how I currently feel whenever literally anyone tries to start up the "AAA vs indie" culture war (alternatively, the "what counts as indie" culture war).
An edited comic from The Simpsons season 8 episode 6, "A Milhouse Divided", showing Kirk van Houten holding a beer in his underwear showing off a racecar bed to Homer.
Kirk: "I only play underground, unheard-of indie games, do you?"
Homer: "I play my games because they're fun to play."

It turns out the reason I had so much difficulty with seamless portals was because the original tutorial I followed was an over-complicated mess that flubbed the velocity on portal exit. I found a new tutorial that not only fixed this, but drastically simplified the entire blueprint. #gamedev

I sometimes wonder if you could shut down an argument by asking someone about the last time they were wrong about anything. Literally, anything: the price of a hamburger at a nearby restaurant, a lore fact you mentioned in chat, the typing of a Pokemon. Anything.

Not sure how concerned I should be about a recent wave of complaints I've seen across various games that all seem to boil down to "I can't believe the game wants us to PLAY it, what were the devs even thinking?!"

The number of AI cat gifs on Tenor is just sad. Art at least requires skill and patience (or money if you commission), hence why it's easy for them to trick themselves with "AI makes art accessible". To make a cat gif you need a cat and the ability to use a phone camera. AI bros can't even do that.

Neospector @neospector.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
I'm starting to think there's only like 3 actual big arguments on the entire internet and all the tiny controversies are just one or more of the big 3 just dressed up in different costumes depending on who's talking and which side they support.

“What does it matter if someone favors Star Wars over Star Trek?” Very little logically, but there is a perception of someone being “other” if they do not conform. If someone is actively hostile about it, part of them might be treating the dispute far more seriously than is rational. Or so I guess

I really shouldn't engage with the Steam community, I don't know why I bother, it just fuels my cynicism and distrust in people's ability to properly engage with media. They're not the only community that does it, but they're definitely the worst.

Nothing quite like a problem where you know a better solution exists compared to what's available through online resources but you can't think of what it is. Or more specifically, dear Unreal Engine tutorial community: please stop shoving everything you make into Event Tick, thanks.

Watching Stellaris drop a bunch of performance analysis is funny because the normal 10% of the community went "oh cool" and the remaining 90% went "nuh-uh my friend's cousin's wife's former college roommate said sentry arrays felt kinda laggy so it must be that, you devs are just lazy!"

Look, it's not a secret that I hate Palworld, but the amount of hypocrisy from people whom I know previously complained about the "Fortniteification" of games (I.E. crossovers) suddenly turning around and praising PocketPair for going all-in on crossovers is too annoying to not at least mention.

I still get blind-sided by the sheer number of people who just hear something and immediately assume it's fact. I get it, there are always people who you consider trustworthy, but still, at least spend a minimum 30 seconds to see if the thing you're mad about is, y'know, ACTUALLY REAL.

I'm sorry, I'm utterly fascinated by this clickbait-ass article about the "cooler, Japanese" method for multiplication that: A) Isn't useful for large numbers B) Likely didn't originate in Japan C) Doesn't seem to actually be in use in Japan today that I can confirm getpocket.com/explore/item...

I still really don't like the term "enshittification", seeing as 90% of its use-case is "this new thing is mildly inconvenient, sorta cringe, or otherwise doesn't vibe with my nostalgia, this is clearly evidence of the total collapse of western civilization."

Neospector @neospector.bsky.social · 09/04/2025
Sometimes it's really hard to have optimism whenever I see the YouTube sidebar. "People are generally intelligent and rational." *glances to multiple video essays made by grown-ass men saying the world will implode because they don't find Pokemon fun anymore* "...ignore that, please."

Neospector @neospector.bsky.social · 25/03/2025
Something that irks me is when people complain about "enshitification" and then proceed to nostalgia-wank about how "great" the old internet was. Buddy, you threw a tantrum because a new menu is mildly inconvenient to you, you would straight-up die if you tried to actually browse older websites.

I feel like I'm going insane watching people elsewhere on social media treat a Pokémon Company tweet where they "got the Pokéball wrong" as serious drama. Like, yeah, game devs have a bunch of ways to spawn in stuff for testing and promos. You can't be "sus" when you own the friggin' IP.

I'm starting to have doubts on how valid "it works on MY machine" is as mockery. Yeah, it works on my machine, and my machine is a mess, so now the better question is: what absolute fuckery did you do to YOUR machine's settings that prevents this simple solution from working?

The existence of the words "imploded" and "exploded" suggests that the default state of all things is "ploded". The philosophical ramifications of this are unclear.

Bethesda is the new Disney's Star Wars. In the sense of I'm sure they did SOMETHING bad with their IPs but I don't believe a single word of it because I'm constantly catching people making blatant lies and every time I point out said lies I get told it "doesn't matter because it COULD be true".

I'm actually really sick of people acting every new game, game update, movie, TV show, TV show episode, book, etc is the end of originality or whatever just because they in particular don't like it. It wasn't true the last 7,564,378,619,818 times someone said it, why on earth would it be true now?

Both of these below users could have gotten better art more easily from an actual artist, or by doing it themselves. They chose not to, and the results speak for themselves.
A post from self-proclaimed "AI Artist" Barb Bowman, @barbbowman.bsky.social saying "GM Friends"

The image in the post features an AI-generated image of a deer with large cartoon eyes and freakishly small legs.A post from "AI enthusiast" EvitaLaNonPioggia, @evitanon.bsky.social, which reads: "🎨Do you like this color palette?
Add "--sref 1656007394" to your MJ prompts."

The post features an image of an AI-generated eye which has, for some reason, blue skin with orange polka dots. The iris itself is bright orange and vaguely reptilian in shape, despite the surrounding skin being human.

The last political snark I'll make is this: Blaming everyone but themselves and then refusing to do anything but sit on their ass and clutch pearls about how things got this way is pretty much what I expected from social media. Though that doesn't make it less infuriating.

I was going to call out the person who sent a horde of blank-avatar accelerationist tankies to my replies because I told him this would happen if people didn't vote, but it seems he got banned for doing what he did to a bunch of others. So, now I don't really have an outlet for my rage at all. Yay.

Apropos of nothing I kinda unironically wish recipes would stop using things like "medium-high heat", or at least put "about a x on my stove" in parentheses. Stoves go 1 to 9 and I know I cook top ramen on 7. Gimme a reference point I can use, please and thank you.

More of these AI fuckers. The user claiming to be against climate change especially pisses me off; they repost a bunch of keywords and don't really have much original content so I suspect they're a bot. And in case you were looking, usernames are in the alt text. Block as you will.
A post from @dogwifcat.bsky.social: "Buddy and Mochi are going fishing with their new Tahitian friends. Buddy eagerly holds a fishing rod, while Mochi calmly watches the water. Together, they enjoy a peaceful and fun day in the turquoise waters of Tahiti! 🐶😺❤️🎣

Which place would you like them to visit next?"

The post features an incredibly bad AI-generated image of a dog, cat, and fisherman on a raft near a tropical island. The fisherman has his hands out as if casting a pole, but his hands are empty because the fishing pole is in the foreground, clipping through the dog's face.A post from @deloma.bsky.social: "Let’s not forget this Oil Corporation ~ Make them pay 🌍 🔥 🥵 droughts 🌀🌀🌀 🌪️🌪️🌪️ 🔥🔥🔥🔥
$750 ~ really?"

The image features an AI-generated image of a disaster with a large billboard in the middle reading "HURRICANE MILTON SPONSORED BY CHEVRON"

Most of the words on the sign are distorted, though the word "Chevron" is especially bad.

I'm getting a slew of random AI image posts on my timeline lately and I have no idea why, though I'd really appreciate it if they'd fuck right off.
A post from @manourabary.bsky.social: "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." Psalm 119:105

Image contains an AI-generated image of a lamp in the middle of autumn leaves. The lamp is off-center from its base. The watermark from the AI generator that made the image is still visible.A post from @palluroy4u.bsky.social (for some reason their username is "Birds photography" despite all posts being AI-generated images).

The image contains an AI-generated image of a large bird sitting on top of several smaller birds. The smaller birds are apparently supposed to be babies (the plurality of "babies" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, the plumage of the baby birds appears to be merged together in one bizarre lump of feathers). All of them are sitting on a weirdly-bent branch.A post from @bassyjam.bsky.social: "FEELIN THAT #Music by Bassy Ham - Listen on Patreon" followed by a link to their Patreon.

The video features a bizarre, AI-generated radio full of weird, swirly buttons and knobs. The music itself is likely also AI-generated, featuring repetitive bass lines and auto-tuned vocals, but I'm not as skilled at identifying AI music so please don't take that as fact.

I wish Unreal Engine tutorials stopped putting so much into the character blueprint. I understand the engine itself requires the character or camera for certain actions, but isn't it much better practice to spread out functionality between blueprints and make everything more modular?

I've figured out why I get so angry at people complaining about computers online: it reminds me of working in IT. People: "Ugh, can you believe this issue I'm having with Windows?" Me: "Well, you can solve that by—" People: "I don't want a solution! I want to be mad about the problem existing!"

I don't understand a lot of these "real <profession> reacts" videos. At least the ones where they're watching a player and not doing a Let's Play. Not because they're just overdone, but every time I watch them they never offer any perspective? They just repeat the most obvious things imaginable.

Please, I'm begging people, this is Slide Cop 2.0, not every viral video is a shocking commentary on our society that needs elaborate analysis, it's literally just some guy doing a joke at his wedding that his wife very likely agreed to beforehand, please turn off the computer and GO OUTSIDE.
A post by @JessPected on Twitter that reads: "Women are told from childhood that a man is the prize & a wedding will be her one special day. And men go out of their way to ruin it. The way men punish women (& perform for other men). And they wonder why women are realizing this isn't for them & won't bring them happiness."

They are quote-tweeting another user, @Enezator, who just says "Hahahaha" at an incredibly benign video of a guy getting married while holding up a sign that says "Help me" on it.
