Excited to share our new paper in Proc. R. Soc. B! 🐒🪨 We found that wild capuchin monkeys prioritize "social cues" (signs of previous use) over raw material quality when choosing nut-cracking tools. A big step in understanding cultural evolution in primates. #AnimalBehavior #primatology

After a lot of work, delays and difficulties, we are almost finishing the new @neoprego.org research base at Serra da Capivara! 🏗️🚧🏠 This base will provide great stability for us to continue doing long-term research on the capuchin monkeys of Serra da Capivara and their incredible culture.

What if you gave stones from around the world to nut-cracking capuchin monkeys in São Paulo? @tfalotico.bsky.social, @tomosproffitt.bsky.social & team tested rocks from Olduvai hominin and Thai macaque sites. Nut stability on the anvil was the key to success 🧪🏺🐒🥜 www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
A figure from a preprint paper by O'Malley et al. showing anvils of different stone materials before and after their use by capuchin monkeys to crack nuts. The number of hits by a monkey is shown for each anvil, ranging from 84 to 1758 hits. Only one anvil, made of thick concrete and labeled (b), is intact afterwards. The others, made of siltstone, quartzite, sandstone, thin concrete and ironstone are all broken apart to some degree after their use. The paper is titled 'Material matters: raw material influences stone tool performance in capuchin monkeys'

Our “field table” used in the activity of capturing and collecting blood from the monkeys, which we carried out last week. It was the first time we did this type of collection at Serra da Capivara, in this case we want to analyze the DNA of this population with unique behaviors! 🧪🐒 @neoprego.org

The Captive Primate Safety Act would protect monkeys from the US pet trade. In recognition, we’ll be highlighting ways humanity’s cousins have resisted captivity over the next few weeks, starting with monkey attacks. Chimp attacks get headlines, but monkeys easily win the numbers game. (1/4)
Black-and-white half-toned photo of a macaque bearing its teeth with the headlines superimposed "NOT YOUR PET (H.R.8186 / S.4206). This is the image Monkeywire is using to promote the proposed Captive Primate Safety Act.

I know we're all up to our ears in political activity, but this bill really matters, and it's the sort that might well die for lack of attention. It would prohibit the private ownership of primates. As the thread says, like many species, primates are cute when they're small, but not so much later.
