Pascals Wager: Covid edition. If I'm wrong, I've mildly disadvantaged myself by wearing a mask in public. If you're wrong, you have played a part in spreading disease, disability and death to millions, possibly including yourself and your loved ones.

Los Angeles city has a population of 3.8 million people. That's >1% of the US population, more than Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska and both Dakotas, combined. Los Angeles county has a population of 9 million. Its GDP is over $1.3 trillion & it's the third largest city economy globally Small price to pay.

Saw a recipe where step 1 was "preheat oven" then step 7 was "marinate for at least 6 hours or preferably overnight." Just how much preheating do we need? Yeah, I gave that one a miss.

Restaurant quality butter chicken is excellent. But I'd go further: Butter chicken is one of the few dishes that even the cheapest frozen supermarket version isn't disappointing.

Yeah, invoke the McConnell rule for lame duck presidents (by the way, call Trump "Lame Duck Trump" every opportunity you get) But - and listen, this is important - in 2029 pass legislation requiring confirmation hearings to commence within 6 weeks of nomination.

(Queens Birthday used to be in June, but the government changed Kings Birthday to October to match the southern state's day off. No-one cared)

I'd like it noted that Queensland has Labour Day first Monday in May, and every so often 1 May, International Labour Day, falls on a Monday. The Newman government tried to change it to October. That only lasted two years before it reverted back.

Exactly! I’ve been posting this meme hoping that understanding will go further.
Light purple handwriting-ish font on light blue background with leaf motifs around the edge.
Says “The reason we have so many horrible old men in charge of everything right now is that we don’t ruin young rapists’ promising futures”

(Unfortunately the apostrophe is in the wrong place in the meme, but I couldn’t bear to repeat the mistake here!)

"But we don't want to ruin his future" say the men in power, who know they were in the same position two, three, four decades ago. Maybe we wouldn't be here if we'd identified and shamed rapists in previous generations.

I remember when we expected dignified behaviour from our elected officials, at least in public. Now we're getting sweary comedy routines from people who aren't in any way clever or funny.

I watched the AI episode of If You're Listening last night. Apparently the AI you're using doesn't learn anything after its release date. Matt Bevan asked it questions about current events. It didn't know about the Iraq war. It scoffed at the possibility of Trump launching one. Recommended viewing.

I know enough history to remember union protests against Pig Iron Bob selling cheap metal to Japan in the 1930s when they were invading Manchuria, but I just had to google "genro-era" because I'd never heard the word before. Does that count?

Also, Covid is not past tense. You will die or get incapacitated, or you won't. (Covid deaths are running slightly fewer than influenza, but still we recorded average 2 deaths per day in Australia in July 2026)

A new recruit walked in on the General and a "friend", naked and in a compromised position. The recruit saluted. "You don't salute the man, you salute the uniform" said the General. The recruit turned around and saluted the uniform hanging over the chair. Yeah, the occupant is often noxious.

Yes. I respect the Office of president of the United States a whole lot more than the filthy wrecking incumbent does. In this term, it looks like I respect the Office more than the Supreme Court, Congress, and the entire Republican Party do. Right now, my respect is entirely historical.

I don't normally post spoilers, but I suspect that the ai that created today's delux #waffle has had a breakdown
Delux waffle is a word game, eight 7 letter words in a grid.
Only one word is possible, the others are gibberish.
Example:
C. H. E. L blank X. L.
The only options for the blank are U. P. D.

Today I learnt that the character in the Chuck Berry song, Johnny B Goode, was originally written as a "colored boy" but it was changed to "country boy" to let it be played on the radio, because for heavens sake you can't have a colored* hero of a song about colored people's music. (*1950s term)

Basic questions to ask. How many local people will be employed long-term (and what other jobs could they be doing instead) What are the environmental effects (and how else could the power/water/etc be used) Who takes the profits? AI isn't physical. If we lose AI, the whole world has lost it too.

Apart from everything else, let's look at this in business terms. Dividends come from profits. America isn't currently returning a profit. Promising dividends from future borrowings, charged to future taxpayers, is basically a Ponzi scheme.

My friend shared this map with me yesterday. He was wondering why they chose 125 km, rather than 150km. This is the 125km radius of the three closest mines to Brisbane, and most of Brisbane is excluded.
Map. Three blue arcs, all terminating outside Brisbane and most of its suburbs.

It's killed some of us already. See: Unprecedented droughts, heatwaves and forest fires in normally cool, wet countries. See: Glacial melt causing flash flooding. We're not all going to die at once. As farmlands become unusable, starvation and disease will slowly decimate us.

I'll never stop reminding people that in the 1990s Australia said he wasn't a fit and proper person to own a casino in Sydney, due to his links to organised crime. This itself was based on a report from New Jersey in 1986 about mob connections helping build his Atlantic City casino. He's a crook.
