An honest nuance: the "present but broken box" tamper state (provenance_tamper) is coming in v1.5.0, so on the 1.4.0 build in your post it distinguishes unsigned from failed-validation but not yet the malformed-box case as its own flag. LMK if you need the exact JSON shape.

For the specifics: unsigned, verified, trusted, signer, signed_at, claim_generator, assertions, ingredient_count, validation_errors, failure_reason, and provenance_tamper are all separate fields in the JSON output, and the GUI gives provenance_tamper its own tamper badge.

Provenance tampered: a manifest box is present but malformed or partial, which is positive evidence someone broke it rather than cleanly removing it. Reported as provenance_tamper with a reason, and it's kept distinct from both "unsigned" and "signature failed."
