My mum has a very specific way of telling you that someone has died. Identity of the person, the fact they died, cause of death, age. Always in that order. “The man who lives at the bottom of Church Road - dropped dead. Heart attack. 57”.

Parents are staying over so I’ve had to make up the sofa bed in the spare room where I normally work. As a result, I now have a cuck chair in my room.

David Attenborough’s full titles devolve into a drunk guy trying to talk to you outside a kebab shop at 2am.

Forget him pretending he can drink Guinness - what the fuck is this conversation? Absolutely unbearable, all of it.

David Mitchell’s book “The Bone Clocks” is initially set in 1984 and the protagonist has a Queen is Dead poster on the wall, an album that wasn’t released until 1986. I slammed the book shut as soon as I read that and burnt it in the garden. Haven’t read a thing since.

Feel like I’ve been fighting a cold for a few days and today it might just have taken hold. Welcome to Burnham’s broken Britain.

It’s now been as long since my first Facebook post as the time between that post and me using a Commodore 64.

America right now is the maddest place on earth. Like watching a David Lynch film.

The fact this was 9 years ago is depressing for more than one reason.

If you haven’t come across them already, I can heartily recommend @rosetintedspectrum.bsky.social and @franticplanet.bsky.social’s YouTube accounts for explorations of the strange and frankly dreadful UK shows of our childhoods.

…then you’re missing one of the fundamentals of responsible dog ownership.

Neil @neilrich75.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I really hope this doesn’t come across as ableist. It’s about the dog’s wellbeing and that of those area. A lot of dog owners overestimate the recall abilities of their dog and if you’re not able to actually intervene if the dog attacks other dogs or people, or if you can’t keep it safe

A relatively new gripe for me: people with limited mobility who have their dogs off lead in parks and other public areas. Obviously it’s great to own a dog regardless of physical impairment, but maybe keep it on a lead if you’re unable to actually intervene or do anything if it goes rogue.

Having not heard of her, I was worried I’d entered a sleep-deprived fugue state when this popped up on my feed. Once again, you are much more “down” than I am.

when did people start going completely mad? We have utter batshit nonsense like this from Braverman, we have Trump completely out of control in the US, we have "Danny Tommo" trying to kill RNLI volunteers, we have maniacs flat-out denying vaccines are good. Did the pandemic cook everyone's brains?

The Juliet Bravo bit is one of those moments of TV that I remember but then wonder if it actually happened. Luckily YouTube is there to show me I didn’t hallucinate the whole thing. Inspired stuff.

I have a few gigs coming up on the schedule, which is always good. Kristin Hirsch this Saturday at a local church, followed by Cory Hanson, The Orb and Tortoise. Also Kings of Convenience next year, for fans of delayed gratification.

Also - how fragile were connections then before the advent of big internet? No way of connecting apart from a tenuous agreement to meet at a certain place at a certain time. How much romance have we lost?
