If you leave your home to your spouse it's IHT exempt. If you leave it to your kids (or grandchildren), it raises the nil rate band to £500k.

I was at a meeting at Imperial in 2001 which his wife, Mary, was presenting at. It was all a bit awks, but in a good way.

Good luck with those pesky ligations. I used to electroelute bands onto Whatman paper in the days before gel extraction kits (I'm old).

Yes, the cookers (Bramley) are very good. They get distributed around the village. Most of the eating apples are old varieties, of variable quality, but the local horses like them.

I worked on cyclic electron flow in the C4 pseudocereal Amaranthus for many years. The C4 pathway seems to evolved independently many, many times (~ 50!) over the years.

You think you're having a good day, I've just had my first packet of crisps a week after having a tooth out. Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive.

Same. I've been buying Apple kit since 1991, and the M1 MBA is probably the best computer I've owned, by some distance.

Delighted to see Jonathan Meades get a mention (oft overlooked by many; not just a bloke in a suit & shades talking about Essex on the telly). And all the others, of course.

Absolutely terrific. I mean, it's always a banger, but the performance, balance and quality of the sound were wonderful.

Could be an immature horse/field mushroom (they have white/pink gills before turning brown), but the gills of some nasty Amanita species always stay white. If there’s a bag-like structure around the base of the stalk it’s Amanita.

Need to have a closer look at the gills and the very base of the stem to be sure. It could be a field mushroom, a horse mushroom , or possibly Amanita ☠️. Look for yellow staining when cut too.

It appeared underneath my bird table. The seeds can lay dormant in the soil for many years apparently. Interesting plant, but I don't want it in my garden!

Thorn apple (Datura stramonium), known as jimson weed in the US, sprouting in my back garden, north Cornwall. Family Solanaceae, and packed with toxic alkaloids. It can seed rather prolifically, so I removed it. @bsbibotany.bsky.social #wildflowerhour

Yes. I saw it a while back while recovering from the flu, which undoubtedly coloured and heightened the experience. Magical realist grave-robbing?

It’s interesting, isn’t it. Mahler 7 was overlooked for years, and the British musicologist Deryck Cooke called it the ‘Cinderella’ of Mahler’s symphonies. It must be one of the most performed of his works at the moment. (I’m strictly on the fence about it!).
