Our leaders have a duty to keep every student safe. We call on our lawmakers to take urgent, bold action to #EndGunViolence. Together, we will unite to demand safe schools and safe communities for all of our children.

A school should be the safest place in any community, a place of learning and belonging. We grieve the lives lost at Silver Rail Elementary. Gun violence cannot be the price of an education, and no educator or student should fear for their life in the classroom.

Today, I'm thinking about the 5-year-old who got in the car with his father like any other day, then watched him be shot by ICE just feet away. ICE is traumatizing our children. Shooting up our sidewalks makes us all unsafe. Federal agents killing people in the streets is an outrage. ICE out NOW.

Clearly, these students understand: educators' working conditions are students' learning conditions. Everyone is harmed when we don't invest in our schools—and fully funding our schools benefits us all.

I'm joining @eduinternational.bsky.social to celebrate World Teachers' Day, and to say: teacher rights and student rights go hand in hand. Without empowered teachers, quality education can't exist. We must ensure teachers have respect, dignity, and a meaningful voice in decisions about education.

Instead of helping families make ends meet, the Trump administration is once again putting its thumb on the scale for private school vouchers at the expense of the public schools that serve 90% of America's students.

As I said on @wabe.org yesterday, this administration's voucher scheme would hurt rural communities like the one I grew up in. Public education should be the great equalizer—and vouchers are the exact opposite. Listen to my full conversation with Rose Scott.

At a time when educators, students, and families are calling for more resources to strengthen neighborhood public schools—where 90% of students go—the Trump administration is advancing a voucher plan to divert taxpayer dollars to subsidize private education for a select few.

What an honor to join @dianeravitch.bsky.social at the Network for Public Education last week. As we discussed, the movement against our public schools is strong—but it is not in my nature to despair. We will keep fighting to open doors to opportunity just as the teachers who inspired me did.
