Thinking about it, it’s not something that is specific to SNW, though it’s rarer in previous series. The DS9 episode Beyond the Stars is a victim to it as well. It’s overlooked because it is such a good story, but really it’s not a good Star Trek story

Gimmicks are fine if the end result is a Star Trek story. Orders of Magnitude worked fine for that reason. Hell, I even enjoyed their Hangover inspired episode. A bit silly, but then so was I, Mudd. Where it falls down is when the gimmick takes over - the Muppet one or the Casablanca episode
