Was 'The Last Frontier' an actual TV show that existed in the 1960s version of the Star Trek universe? Or was it entirely created by the holodeck?

Channel 4's catch-up service has now got Taskmaster Australia and Taskmaster New Zealand to watch. I have to say that NZ has absolutely nailed the format, whereas Australia feels a little weird. Canned laughter possibly? It seems really artificial. New Zealand wins this task! 5 points.

Agreed. As I said - no hate on these shows :)

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 07/10/2026

Interesting to see that the only Star Trek and Doctor Who currently in production are both pre-school shows - Star Trek: Scouts and TARDIS Crew. Not hating that these shows exist by the way... it's just interesting. I just hope we get the grown-up versions back at some point.

Half way through the last night of seven night shifts in a row and I'm looking forward to seeing daylight again. I'm also looking forward to Queen by Candlelight Saturday evening at Brecon Cathedral.

I miss game names like Eric and the Floaters, or Fat Worm Blows a Sparky, or Jet Set Willy, or Kokotoni Wilf, or Everyone's a Wally... Regardless of whether the game was any good or not you remembered those names!

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

There's something wrong here - we're having a civilized discussion about a disagreement in Star Trek... Should we be arguing and insulting each other by now? Is that how we're supposed to do it?

030

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

No worries. I actually just noticed that the bottom two episodes on your table were in equal last place. Did you put Human Best Friend last due to a higher number of last place votes? No hate - just curious :)

100

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

So to try to tweak the order I thought I'd give the Formula 1 scoring to the table (as a win gets a heavier weighting than a regular average and... Human Best Friend is now ninth overall instead of last. Other than that, no change.

120

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

I am surprised how in the minority I am with Human Best Friend. I LOVED that episode and have never laughed so much as I did with it. But... it seems that everybody else hated it.

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

I confess I missed that but ... ironic isn't it?

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

I'm hoping to get there sometime in 2030. Hopefully there will have been a regime change by then...

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

...I just can't watch him! Does anyone else have one of these irrational dislikes of an actor that they can't justify? I won't tell you who he is at the moment because I don't think it's fair to throw hate against an actor for something out of their control.

120

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

I don't know what it is but I seem to have an irrational dislike of a particular genre actor. I can't explain why I dislike him other than he keeps playing villains. I've heard him on a recent episode of Dropping Names (the Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner podcast) and he seems cool! ...

Yeah that's what caught me out. I could have put Mark Gatiss in there too. Jessica Hynes, Nick Frost, Michael Smiley (oy-oy!). Apparently John Simm too! I forgot he was Daisy's ex-boyfriend years before Sam Tyler and The Master.

Now that season 4 of Strange New Worlds has finished, I've also come to the sad realisation that the next time we see this wonderful cast, it'll be the last time. Same for the Academy cast. 66 episodes for these two shows combined is just not enough!

25. Antonio Giovinazzi Giovinazzi aka "Italian Jesus", raced in the first two rounds of the 2017 season championship for Sauber before switching to Alfa Romeo for 2019 and Haas' test driver in 2022. He picked up 21 points across 62 race starts.

24. Patrick Friesacher Friesacher raced for Minardi for the first 11 races of the 2005 season. His only points though was in the US Grand Prix where only six cars raced. He scored 3 points that day. He then drove for A1 Team Austria in 2016 and in ALMS in 2018.

23. Pietro Fittipaldi Fittipaldi, the grandson of the legendary Emerson, competed in the final two races of the 2020 season for Haas after Romain Grosjean had his fiery crash at Bahrain. However, during those two races he would score no points. He now works for Cadillac as their simulator driver.

They could have done it as an homage to any number of classic writers too. I wonder how we would have felt if they'd said the author was "Dorothy Fontana" for instance.

020

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

Yeah but I thought part of the story was getting Pelia to pose as the author...

110

Geoff Owen, 8-Bit Back Issues @ncc17formula1.bsky.social · 22/09/2026

I think that if they knew they'd come back to the story they wouldn't have included that easter egg, but include it they did, so they now have to ensure the continuity of it. Can you imagine the pitchforks if they'd changed the author?

Prepping the next episode recording of the podcast with an amazing guest (which will be out in November) and I find this comic strip in the pages of Crash issue 35. Wait... do you see what I see? Is that THE Charlie Brooker? I know he worked for OINK! Is this an early appearance?
