Yeah, we'll see. I'm in a similar position - I have a lot of Git experience and haven't found JJ to be a huge QoL improvement, but a bunch of folk I respect have and Git can be annoying, so I'm trying to learn it properly.

Having gone through Steve’s JJ tutorial, what do I read next? I’m comfy with basic usage, but obviously there’s loads more to learn and I can’t find good resources

I haven’t been for a few years, but would like to. Was meant to go a couple of weeks ago, but couldn’t because of my broken arm. I’ll definitely give you a shout if I make it up

OH Functional programming is when Rust people read your code and go "what the fuck (laudatory)". Imperative programming is when Rust people read your code and go "what the fuck (derogatory)"

A lot of you seem to be strangely occupied with EAs or rationalists or anthropic, but not openai or xai or, like, authoritarian developments in various governments. You sure you're directing your disdain at the biggest problems?

We rewrote one internal tool to use Rust (instead of TS/Node) as a proof of concept/trial balloon, and yesterday switched over one of our hourly jobs to use it instead of the TS version that it had been using. Over 10× better memory usage and 10–100× improvement in how fast it runs. 🤩
Bar graph showing timing of an hourly pipeline. It shows a relatively steady state, some growing outliers, and then a huge drop to a new steady state baseline.

Seriously, I'm not usually a big cycling helmet advocate, but I'd probably be dead or in a very bad way if I wasn't wearing mine. Also, gloves are really important too - I can't imagine how messed up my hands would have been without them

I am being a bit quiet on the socials and blog because I broke my arm and messed up my hand a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully, normal service resumes in a few weeks. I came off my bike pretty badly, but luckily the left arm is the only serious damage - wear your helmet, kids!

History is endlessly replete with people assuming that the big affairs of state will remain forever far away right up until those huge forces roar through their town or village, burning and killing. Then suddenly it matters quite a lot. As a pundit or journalist it is *your job* to remind them!

NZ health service is absolutely at breaking point. It’s already affecting thousands of people’s quality of life. If the government doesn’t change this year, it will get worse. Many will die, many more will have their lives ruined.

There's exactly one reason that doctors and lawyers are well-paid professions, and it is because they have been particular good at "fuck you for not being in" (which I'm not saying is a good thing objectively or for society, or even for doctors and lawyers entirely, but it is why they're well-paid)

On one hand, this (the post and the thread) is absolutely true and valid. On the other, 'letting more people in' is a strategy of the management class for lowering wages. That and the equivalent but with AI is what has made me a lot colder on "we need to let more people in".
