Campaigning for legal protections for neighbours of wood burners. Neighbours face inhumane levels of toxic pollution from "Ecodesign" stoves.

This highlights the problem of wood burners. Average PM2.5 in summer– 8.2µg/m³, in winter-11.2µg/m³. Would be bigger difference if people around here didn’t love their charcoal BBQs so much! Obviously, averages obscure the real problem – the dangerous shorter term spikes. @mumsforlungs.bsky.social

Thanks for supporting action on air pollution @eddavey.libdems.org.uk, but this isn’t just about transport. As you know, Surbiton in your constituency was the most polluted town in the UK for PM2.5 pollution in 2023. This was from wood smoke, not traffic. RBK still have their heads in the sand!

@tobyperkinsmp.bsky.social Thanks for highlighting that MHCLG refused to attend EAC session yesterday. This is scandalous. They are responsible for the HETAS “Competent Person Scheme” which has devastated the AQ and the lives of neighbours of wood burners in SCAs. #HETAS_stinks 1/3

Excellent news that @london.gov.uk wants to reduce wood burning across London - it's a major source of #AirPollution. Burning solid fuel can triple particle pollution in the home, with potentially serious #Health consequences. We welcome the Mayor's proposals - non-essential burning needs to go.

This is excellent news if its true and we really get zero emissions zones. Hopefully not another rehash of the “Ecodesign” and “Burn Better” myths. Disappointing The Telegraph mentions the ASA ruling against B&H council but not the ruling against the Stove Industry Alliance's misinformation!

Very likely that people living in SCAs next to "modern" stoves are exposed to worse Benzene concentrations than properties in the vicinity of this factory. 1040tonnes from "modern" stoves (Eco+Adv) Vs 1070tonnes from industry. Why do we accept this just because Defra fails to measure it at source?

The “UK’s major air polluters” are the 3m households that burn solid fuel. Much more than the 43m road vehicles. Further expensive action on “transport” will make minimal difference (apart from banning diesel). Action on unnecessary solid fuel burning would see vast improvements immediately.

Last year, a review published in The Lancet Planetary Health found that exposure to outdoor #AirPollution increases the risk of dementia. So we're very glad the WHO has now updated its #Dementia guidelines to include the need to reduce air pollution. Another reason to keep pushing for cleaner air.

Thanks for finally acknowledging that more needs to be done instead of implying air pollution has somehow been fixed in London. Hope that means there are plans for action on solid fuel burning, the largest source of PM2.5 and carcinogenic Benzoapyrene pollution in London.

Most of these things are within our control but wood smoke entering our home from a neighbours wood burner needs urgent action. Mould due to inability to ventilate our homes also needs to be addressed. Many can't afford the expensive dehumidifiers we need when we have to block all ventilation points

Education needs to play a role too- many people suffering from the health impacts of wood smoke are unaware their neighbours heating choice is making them ill as the media always blames traffic for air pollution. DEFRA refuse to discuss wood smoke emissions with people harmed by their misinformation

So how has air quality changed in London? While emissions from road traffic continue to fall, other sources of pollution are becoming more prominent. Researchers say further progress will require tackling emissions from heating as well as transport.

Confirmation from Defra that they don’t care about people who have had their health impacted by their promotion of “Ecodesign” and “Ready to Burn” in Smoke Control Areas and that they cannot justify their excessive carcinogenic Benzo[a]pyrene emissions. (1/4)

Unfortunately the report also shows that many of these "concerned" people are unaware of the main sources of air pollution - they are more anti-car than pro clean air. This needs to change. Domestic and commercial solid fuel burning needs to be addressed too, not just traffic!

I've been doing some analysis on the sensor data. Manchester Piccadilly is about 11 miles from the Dovestone wildfire. Hourly PM2.5 exceeded 100 µg/m³, yet DAQI stayed ‘Low’. Its rolling 24-hour PM2.5 mean smooths away short, severe smoke peaks. The hourly European AQI shows what DAQI misses.

Disappointing this article (like most) fails to mention the largest source of air pollution in the UK-domestic solid fuel burning.Traffic is a very different issue – the air pollution is a tiny amount from a huge number of people (43m+), wood burning is huge pollution from a tiny minority. (<3m)

Unusual for the BBC to mention the health impacts of woodsmoke, so this is an important item on air pollution and Emma was brilliant. However, they spoiled it at the end by repeating stove industry misinformation about "cleaner" solid fuels. "Dry" wood and SSF pollute differently, not better!

235kg of lead from "Ecodesign" stoves burning "Ready to Burn" wood alone, according to NAEI data 2024. 0.193% of the UK total. May not seem like much but its totally unnecessary pollution created by a tiny percentage of the population and mostly concentrated in densely populated SCAs.
