“This storm is so strong, I am finding it hard to fathom what I’m reading despite studying this for 10 years.” Hurricane expert Dr. Nadia Bloemendaal's powerful climate analysis on BBC PM. Sending thoughts and prayers to everyone in Jamaica tonight.

Musk and Trump are a great example of why men are too emotional to lead.

US climate scientists need all the help they can get. Including from foul-mouthed comedians! 🤡😱😱 Watch Emmy Award-Winning David Cross team up with Prof Michael Oppenheimer in the US launch of the hit series "Climate Science Translated". #climate #arresteddevelopment #climatescience

The situation in Mayotte is another example of how vulnerable many isolated territories are to weather / climate risk. Risks compound well after a storm has "ended". While some commercial entities and automobiles have insurance, most homeowners do not. Just awful. www.reuters.com/world/europe...

M7.0 earthquake strikes off the coast of Northern California. Negligible physical damage impacts likely. Of note: The USGS now makes available "aftershock forecasts," which is a pretty cool tool to show plausible expectations of future tremors of varying intensities.

This is by far the most insightful book I have read in probably forever. It's given me the perspective on disasters I've been missing for so long as it's the story no one (perdominantly the media) talks about. Can definitely recommend if you're still looking for a xmas present!

The private sector is hiring scientists at an incredible rate. Even if you consider yourself a "traditional" academic, the ability to translate your research to a real-world application is enormously fulfilling. It shows that quality research matters and has actual impact.

Hey! I'm new here :) I am an assistant professor at the VU & researcher at KNMI. I study tropical cyclone risk under climate change, but slowly evolving to studying other storm systems as well. Also have a special interest for disaster management, communication and risk perception. 🌀

Animation of hourly infrared satellite images following Hurricane Beryl (2024) alongside its estimated intensity from NHC's preliminary best track. Beryl became the earliest North Atlantic category 4 hurricane (previous: Dennis 2005) and then category 5 hurricane (previous: Emily 2005).
