Galway councillor promises no more projects to make walking and cycling safer
-- "I’m happy with my position" councillor says when challenged by a local advocate. A Galway councillor, Cllr Shane Forde (Fine Gael), has vowed to block any future project to make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists while he's still on the council. This morning he posted a photo of the September traffic on Castlepark Road on Facebook, and said: "This is the direct result of multiple traffic lights on the new scheme and the taking away of the slip lane at ATU.

New website provides details of greenways across Ireland
A new website promoting Ireland's greenways -- mostly rural shared walking and cycling routes -- has been launched by the Department of Transport. Greenways.gov.ie includes route information and maps for most of Ireland's longer greenways. The website includes details such as the distance, elevation, estimated travel times, the surface finish of the greenways, and the facilities available along different parts of routes, including public transport access, park and ride and toilets.

Claims against Carlow active travel stink: Why do “straight-talkers” keep saying they support things they don’t?
-- No, the project is not just a cycle lane: It adds accessibility and safety measures. -- Saying you're all for safety and active travel while outright objecting to them makes no sense. -- Objecting to cycle paths on main roads should be seen the same as objecting to footpaths. Comment & Analysis: "1 don't agree with any of this!" said one submission, and if somebody I trusted made all the claims about a project, as two local political representatives have in this case, I'd be of the same view.

Navan TD claims cycle lanes “massive and taking over” streets, but they are normal-sized and only 2km of active travel routes delivered in 10 years
-- Including retirement in the tail of a dying street is "very disingenuous", says local group.-- TD says he "likes to see cycle lanes" and he cycles but complains of construction speed. Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín, a Meath TD, has claimed cycle lanes are "massive and taking over the streets" of Navan town when none of the cycle paths installed in the town is normally sized, and local campaigners say that only 1km of dedicated cycle lane schemes have been built in over a decade and another 1km or so is being built.

Plan submitted for Donegal greenway along “one of Ireland’s most spectacular landscapes”
Planning permission has been submitted by Donegal County Council for the planned Barnesmore Gap Greenway, which is proposed to link Donegal Town with Ballybofey and Stranorlar via the Barnesmore Gap and through what the council describes as "one of Ireland's most spectacular landscapes." The project is described as both an active travel and tourism and leisure route -- including four trailheads with parking and visitor facilities, and direct connections to three primary schools.

-- "Strong opposition and real trepidation," "safety concerns" and "concerns around anti-social behaviour", says residents group. A Limerick City councillor, Cllr Elisa O'Donovan (Social Democrats), has said, "No public consultation took place before the proposal was published", after she and other councillors asked for progress on an active travel project to be delayed until September.
