I have been trying to make time for pottery alongside my PhD. I did my first official market last weekend at the Bowhouse. I was very nervous before but it was so lovely to speak to so many people about my work! I have added a few leftover pieces to my new website the-puffins-burrow.sumupstore.com 🐧

Out looking for wintering Ring Ouzels in an area I'd never visited before in Gredos. Pretty much exclusively juniper and rock. A very cool landscape, and we managed to see 4 ringos!

A day of contrasts. Several flocks of wintering Cranes starting their northward migration whilst the first Swallows and Subalpine Warblers are already here in Extremadura. A delicious 18°C compared to the miserable 4° when I left Aberdeen. And everything is already singing!

Empezando con un basto graznido hace unos 60 millones de años, las vocalizaciones de las aves se han desarrollado hasta el sinfín de composiciones musicales que vamos a oír y disfrutar en los próximos meses. ¿Cómo? ¿Por qué?

It's been a quiet winter for Short-eared Owls in Orkney, perhaps unsurprising after such poor autumn passage through @fairislebirdobs.bsky.social. Extra special then to bump into a roadside group of three birds - hunting, chasing and occasionally bickering with a passing Hen Harrier

We found this lovely Common Scoter on the beach yesterday, wet and unable to fly after the storm. After a night of rest and food at home, it was very lively and ready to go this morning, flying out to sea straight away! Can I count it for the house list?

2024 biodiversity indicators are in... If a wake-up call was needed to show the UK is failing nature, this is it. Short-term trends show progress stalling or reversing. 📉🚨 To meet 2030 targets, we need nature-friendly farming, smart planning &investment in nature now jncc.gov.uk/news/uk-biod...

For our third day of #CurlewAdvent, we're sharing a different species* to our usual Eurasian Curlew. This lovely photo of Hudsonian Whimbrels was taken by @naturalistsam.bsky.social‬ *Possibly reverting back to subspecies, we await news of the speculated taxonomic lumping.
A photo of two Hudsonian Whimbrels in very shallow water, at the edge of sand. The Whimbrels are looking in different directions. The one in front is in focus, while the one behind is blurred. In one corner of the graphic, there are some grey-coloured snowflake graphics. In another corner, this is a red number 3, wearing a santa hat.

Puffins, Kittiwakes, Razorbills—the UK’s decision to end sandeel fishing was a hard-won lifeline for our struggling seabirds. The EU’s move to challenge it risks undoing that progress. 🚨 We urge the Commission to support, not undermine, this key step for marine biodiversity.
A striking Puffin stands out against a deep blue backdrop, its bold black and white plumage sharply defined. Its vibrant orange beak, adorned with grooves, holds a cluster of glistening silver fish, their tiny eyes wide and scales catching the light. The Puffin’s round, expressive eye, ringed with orange, seems to look thoughtfully into the distance, as if contemplating its next flight over the open sea. This captivating moment showcases the bird’s expert fishing skills and the richness of its coastal habitat.
