I made this Pride flag using only NASA images and our team thought it would be cool to share on social (I work on the NASA heliophysics communications team), but it's getting all sorts of hate on the bird app and Fbook. Thought y'all might be more appreciative of it here. ☺️🏳️‍🌈💖
A pride flag with every color band represented by a NASA image. White is Earth clouds, pink is aurora, blue is the Sun in a specific wavelength, brown is Jupiter clouds, black is the Hubble deep field, red is the top of sprites, orange is a Mars crater, yellow is the surface of Io, green is a lake with algae, blue is Neptune, and purple is the Crab Nebula in a specific wavelength.

Stop Censoring Science & History at Our National Parks
The Trump administration's Department of the Interior is forcing the removal or censoring of national parks exhibits that share factually accurate and relevant U.S. history and scientific knowledge. This campaign has escalated in recent weeks. The Trump administration has issued directives to National Park Service staff to remove many exhibits across the country, including ones that discuss the history of slavery and enslaved people, civil rights, the treatment of Indigenous peoples, and...

I say this with every bit of nuance that I can muster: Dr. Nadia Schadlow, a 2018 security advisor to Trump, is the least illuminating guest I can recall @ezraklein.bsky.social ever interviewing. The only thing to be gleaned from listening is that she lacks any semblance of intellectual integrity.

Nadia Schadlow is completely disingenuous in this conversation. It’s practically Orwellian. She wants me to believe that “flexible“ can include doing exactly the opposite of what Trump firmly committed to in every public utterance while running for office? I call bullshit.

Senate Republicans abdicate Constitutional responsibility in an effort to avoid accountability for war and human loss. I’ve been thinking about Drift a lot lately, and how Rachel Maddow (@maddow.bsky.social) covered the history of expanding, unchecked military control for presidents by Congress.

Why are we arresting journalists for covering protests? This might seem like our new status quo with freedom of [insert foundational right here] being treated as a privilege, but this is an escalation. When journalists are arrested, we lose insight into what happens around us. It’s unacceptable.
Minnesota live updates New York Times headline states “Don Lemon is among several more arrested over church protest.” There is a picture of Lemon at the demonstration holding a microphone. The first section of the article reads, “The former CNN anchor and three others were arrested on charges related to a protest this month in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Attorney General Pam Bondi said. Protest were beginning in Minneapolis against the Trump administration‘s immigration crackdown.”

This is a bid for nuance and reason. Demand more of your network/friend group/audience than simple stories and even simpler solutions. Have your catchy hook but keep your substance, too. We do not need complexity to show consideration and care in what ideas we spread and how we spread them. ✌️

Representative Garbarino needs to get to work along with the rest of his Republican colleagues. Not getting your way while holding so much power is NO REASON to hold government hostage. They refuse to negotiate. They refuse to show up at all. They are not entitled to—so they must earn—their seats.

Election strategies do not matter if Democrats are not presenting an alternative. As a New York resident, I could have had two Republican Senators on March 14th, and the votes and non-effort to amend the bill would have been indistinguishable from what Senators Schumer and Gillibrand did [clip: NYT]
New York Times excerpt: "Some Democrats, including Representatives Jake Auchincloss of Massachusetts and Haley Stevens of Michigan, refrained from openly criticizing Mr. Schumer’s shift. They said Democratic infighting after the bill’s passage would only emphasize the divisions within the party. They warned that it would also draw voters’ attention away from Trump trade policies that have dampened the stock market and imbued uncertainty into the broader economy — developments that Democrats said could play to their advantage."

Justifications for this relate to Constitutionality or permissibility within statutes, but what we need to address is the kind of country we want to be. Speech is not a right granted by any government to any person. When governments recognize rights it is to prevent themselves from violating them.

Junior Republican Senate Whip Chuck Schumer miscalculated gravely signing the execution order for Government Programs… to ensure that no one would UNLAWFULLY kill Government Programs. Now that the funding has legislative approval, discontent with cuts will be shared and Trump actions legitimized.

Representatives need to represent their districts. That’s the job. When they choose to depart from representing and stand on personal values, they ought to be able to justify those actions to their constituents as well. Representative Garbarino has not been representing me, so I want to hear why.

Oppose Executive Order Threatening Agency Independence
Text SIGN PGFEDO to 50409 — I am deeply alarmed by the recent executive order that eliminates the independence of regulatory agencies, consolidating unprecedented power within the executive branch. This move threatens the foundation of our democracy by placing agencies like the SEC, FCC, and FEC under direct White House control, effectively stripping them of their ability to operate free from political influence. This order grants the President unchecked authority over financial markets, elections, environmental policies, and legal interpretations. It also allows the Office of Management and Budget to withhold funding from agencies that do not comply, forcing them into submission. These changes dangerously erode the checks and balances that safeguard our government. I urge you to take immediate legislative action to block this order and restore the independence of these agencies. Please speak out against this power grab, push for congressional oversight, and work to ensure that no President—current or future—can dismantle our democratic institutions in this way.

Legislation will sometimes require broad, loosely defined mandates for executive agencies: make water drinkable or keep food and drugs healthful. However, we should not accept looseness in how or whether these departments are administered. We cannot afford an unconstrained executive.

I think the real issue is this deterministic view that many Democrats seem to have that getting the “right words” is messaging. It is a step, but there are no perfect words, so the brunt of the work is shifting public opinion, not relying on a phrase to do the heavy lifting.

One of the reasons why so many established media houses are not accurate in reporting how bad things are: because the facts sound deranged. Doesn’t make them less true. But try pitching a piece „one of Musk‘s guys is linked to a literal pedophile Nazi cyber crime ring“ and see how that goes.

Absurd to cut funding to something because of the importance of funding that thing. This will not deliver the US's stated goal to "have the best medical research in the world" and "to ensure that as many funds as possible go towards direct scientific research," because *less* research will be done.
