Agree, and transparently so. While we can debate the edge cases of whatever contorted explanations are used to launder that racism, it may be better to skip their rationale and call out the racism for what it patently is. Shame on Braverman, though this is barely a new low.

I'm afraid that's not true - that PR is favourable to the left is a well established finding in political science. See www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Ranked choice voting would short circuit some of this nonsense.

We are not yet a year into Trump’s second term and already DOGE has been mothballed, MTG has bailed from Congress, the administration tried and failed to present a Russian plan to end the war, and the ‘Secretary of War’ is trying to court-martial a US Senator. Time for a reminder of this I think…

The Covid enquiry's finding that Johnson's government was "toxic and chaotic" should prompt the question: what conditions must be in place for there to be good government, because the evidence before & since suggests it wasn't merely an individual failing? This question, though, won't be asked.

Can we go back to the days when politicians said that they really wanted to help people but it’s very hard and takes time, rather than saying that they want to hurt people and can do it quickly?

The Prime Minister said in September that we are at a fork in the road. These asylum proposals suggest we have taken the wrong turning. The idea that recognised refugees need to be deported is wrong. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

It's not possible to make it any plainer than this. This isn't about migrants or levels of migration & there are no concessions that can be given to appease these people. This is about seething racists who object to having to see or know that there are *any* non-white faces anywhere

‘Give them enough rope to hang themselves’ is a phrase I first came to understand through Louis Theroux. I find something deeply disturbing and authoritarian in the implicit notion that there are certain topics where audiences cannot be trusted to simply observe and assess on their own terms.

If a news organisation is making -200% margin after five years, it is not a commercial operation and should be assumed to have a different purpose.

A negligent lack of context regarding the rally’s political context, when it represents a vein of our politics dangerous enough to warrant some editorialising rather than this framing as an innocuous ‘family’ event of honest folks ‘concerned with the cost of living’. Let’s not be overly charitable.

Members of my family were tortured and killed in the Holocaust because countries like Britain said it wasn't their problem. Everyone said never again. And here we are. It's sickening beyond belief.

This piece, by @dahliasc.bsky.social, gives a very good and accurate overview of how right wing Israeli public opinion has become over the past decade, and why Netanyahu is not an outlier. These are my takeaways - and differences. 1/ www.foreignaffairs.com/israel/israe...

Completely agree with this, great piece. A lot of it should be self evident by this point, but it feels there’s a bit of reticence among commentators to state these causes for the dysfunction plainly.

What worries me is not government use of AI per se but the slightly credulous way that the government talk about it, which makes me suspect they will be taken for rubes by the tech companies selling their services. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
