Finally, a TV series celebrating the truest of American heroes: Investigative journalists for free alt-weekly newspapers. I feel seen! (But seriously, this show is a delight. Strong Coen Brothers vibes in the best possible way.)

You'll hear from both Storm and his critics in my story this week. Activist and city school board member @zysaidso.bsky.social expressed skepticism, warning her neighbors against "vultures" trying to profit: "Everyone who is skinfolk ain't kinfolk." Instead, she pushed city council members for a zoning amendment that would protect historically black neighborhoods.

Developers said they'd run this plan by "neighborhood leaders." This was news to the neighborhood association. Turns out they meant former vice mayor Wes Bellamy, who says he's previously owned three laundromats. This does not appear to have reassured community members.

Nathan Alderman @nathanalderman.com · 12h
The development would raze the nearby Preston Suds laundromat, a staple for many neighborhood folks. In response, developers said they'd picked out an area warehouse that could take its place, and offer a community center besides. Did they consult with the community on this? ... uh, sort of?

Nathan Alderman @nathanalderman.com · 12h
She follows up on that quick coverage with a more in-depth look at the meeting this week. The developer says its mix of a hotel, plush apartments, and affordable units will enrich the neighborhood. Residents of the historically Black 10th and Page right nearby worry it'll push them out.

The weird thing is, there's no substantial difference between the stops they did and didn't report. Plenty of the stops they originally reported also ended in detention. The original data already showed 50% Latino stops on June 23 -- the amended data's 59% is worse, true, but not that much worse.

The weird thing is, there's no difference between the stops they did report and the stops they didn't! What they already reported showed disproportionate stops of Latino drivers. The existing data included plenty of stops w/ detentions. This new data just makes that look even more disproportionate.

GCSO previously emailed VSP in July to update two "clerical errors" in June's data. If they audited their reported data then, it's not clear why they didn't find or report the dozens of missing stops until September. c-ville.com/forty-traffi...

Greene sheriff adds 40 missing calls to traffic stop data - C-VILLE Weekly
Updated September 28, 2026: Amid a civil rights investigation by the Virginia Attorney General’s office into its traffic stop practices, newly updated data from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office show...

Only one newly reported call involves the detention of a non-Hispanic driver: a man arrested on DUI charges in the last recorded stop of the day.
1120
Nathan Alderman @nathanalderman.com · 28/09/2026
Of the 40 newly reported stops, 28 -- around 2/3rds -- involve Latino drivers. 20 of those stops end with deputies and ICE detaining one or more people. The youngest of these people detained, per VSP records, was 17.
1140
Nathan Alderman @nathanalderman.com · 28/09/2026
At least 41 stops were missing from the data originally. Greene's update lists 40 of them. The one still absent, per GCSO call logs, involved a Latino man deputies were trying to detain fleeing on foot into the woods. Deputies swarmed to the scene and launched a drone, but couldn't catch him.
1160
Nathan Alderman @nathanalderman.com · 28/09/2026
In late September, those stops showed up in VSP's data. Latinos represent about 12% of Virginia's population, per Census data. GCSO's original data showed that 17% of June traffic stops, and 50% on June 23, involved Latino drivers. New numbers: ~25% of June stops (59% on June 23) involve Latinos.

On Sept. 9, C-VILLE emailed GCSO to ask about the missing stops. They never answered us. But FOIA'd emails show their records specialist emailing the Virginia State Police, who maintain that traffic stop data, on Sept. 12, asking about updating stops "that were forgotten to be entered."
A screen capture of an email from GCSO's records specialist to a contact at the Virginia State Police:

Question:

If we have some traffic stops that were forgotten to be entered in June and we entered them now or even after the 15th of the month, I know the form will be updated.

We do try our best to have all information entered and completed by the due date, unfortunately it didn’t happen this time.

I am wanting to know if we would be in violation of code below, if they were entered after the Quartey [sic] time period, and what does that mean for our office if they are late?

At @cvilleweekly.bsky.social, we've got an update to our Sept. 16 story about the Greene County Sheriff's Office's failure to report dozens of traffic stops from its June 23 ICE raids, as the law requires. That data's up now. 1 in 4 drivers Greene stopped in June were Latino.
