There’s apparently an adaptation of THE GREAT WHEN in the works. Ideally they would do something aesthetically similar to COOL WORLD (but better)—but of course they won’t.

Finished I HEAR A NEW WORLD. I found this one marginally less engaging than THE GREAT WHEN, but I’m still looking forward to the next book. On to rereading CARRIE.

What’s fascinating to me about STRANGER THINGS fan theories is that they’re exactly the kind of over-reading Kubrick bros engage in, but because the audience is mostly young and female the whole thing is treated as delusional. Meanwhile SHINING fans get a documentary.

Yeah, I think at this point I’ve heard every possible STAR WARS opinion. I’m good on those for a while.

This business of following up FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS with GILMORE GIRLS sparks some interesting whiplash. It’s not that the kinds of stories they tell are all *that* different—tonight’s FNL featured the coach telling his daughter to avoid boys—but the styles are incredibly clashing.

Peterson might have popularized this, but I remember hearing it something like twenty years ago from the “Wild at Heart” types. A lot of this stuff is far from new.

A critic isn't "trustworthy" because they always tell their audience what they want or expect to hear. That's not trustworthy, that's suspicious. A critic is trustworthy if they're not afraid to give their audience their honest opinion, even if nobody else agrees with them or wants to hear it.

Now I’m rewatching BLAZING SADDLES. I think I said this on the Other Place, but the *real* reason you couldn’t make this movie today is that it’s too “woke.”

Yeah, that wasn’t as technically impressive or narratively tight as ROGER RABBIT. Always appreciate getting to see into Bakshi’s insane imagination, even if it’s very clearly censored.

This will be news to no one, but it turns out ROGER RABBIT is a solid hard-boiled detective story, besides being a technical marvel and also very funny.

As I crawl toward the end of I HEAR A NEW WORLD (at 75% now; travel interrupted), I think the time has come to finally watch a legendary movie about alternate cities. Yes, it’s time to see WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT.

I don’t think LANTERNS is *great* or even close to the best thing to come out of the DC universe under Gunn’s watch, but it’s such an interesting show and it has fantastic performances.

It seems to me that the biggest argument against purely materialist explanations of politics is that materially comfortable people regularly go fashy because they’re bored or horny.

I’ve been watching ASH (Hong Kong show) and was thinking I was picking up some INFERNAL AFFAIRS vibes, but decided that might just be me doing the BOSS BABY thing (gang thriller in Hong Kong etc). But they just outright confirm in episode 8 that, yeah, they’re vibing from INFERNAL AFFAIRS.

But surely we can agree that Jane Austen writes better characters than found in self-published Kindle werewolf/aliens erotica, and that the difference matters.

This recently came up re: silent movies "Are you saying serials are less than a big studio release?" And, in matters of writing quality... yeah. Yeah, I am. Serials are fun! I love them! But they were never Academy Award screenplay contenders (or Photoplay Medal) and it's silly to say they were.

I've been a teacher for almost 40 years. One rule I've followed since the beginning: Never insult students. It's a betrayal of the educational relationship. It's a bad look. And that shit gets back to them. If your students are frustrating you, it's your job to deal with it.

What is it about CARRIE that makes people want to turn it into a tv series? The TV movie from a couple decades ago was, iirc, planned as the start of a series. And now Flanagan seems to be planning on three (!) seasons of his new take.

Related to THE MUMMY, I was thinking the other day how the original MUMMY borrowed from DRACULA but added the reincarnation plot, only for Francis Ford Coppola to make BRAM STOKER’S DRACULA, which basically lifts the plot of THE MUMMY and reapplies it to DRACULA.

Rewatching BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. This really is my favorite of the Universal monster flicks and it’s my favorite kind of adaptation: taking elements from the book left out of the first film and remixing them into something new.
