We're witnessing the line being erased in real time. Twitter, not content to be known as the global homepage of Nazism, racism, and eugenics, is doing a great big "Who, me? LOL!" shrug at its AI function being used to generate CSAM images (and, not insignificantly, fake porn of non-consenting adults too) and instead of immediate, universal revulsion and aggressive action - people being perp walked straight to Federal prison, regulators swarming in to shut it down yesterday and seize the evidence - we have things like UK Labour telling us it's OK because there are rules against it and we all really hope those rules are followed, but we have to keep using Twitter because "balance" or "free speech" or what the fuck are we even doing here anymore.

What we are doing is desensitizing the world. Not to anything in particular, not even to CSAM specifically. We are receiving the message that literally anything a person with wealth and power can conceivably desire to do is fine. It is their right. Nothing is off limits. Nothing is over the line. Rather than slowly boil the frog by demolishing an escalating series of taboos, they've done the coke-fueled thing we've become used to and gone right for the proverbial top; the very worst thing anyone can imagine. Silicon Valley sure does love to think BIG, doesn't it! What visionaries. Lesser men would have started with a less revolting crime; our thought leaders saw the brass ring - which, it is worth restating, is in this analogy child pornography - and went for it.
