We therefore provide a checklist of recommendations to help future nutrition researchers to conduct clearer and more interpretable meta-analyses of specific effects! Special thanks to lead author @nataliaortega.bsky.social and senior author @georgiatomova.bsky.social!

How many nutrition meta-analyses pool estimates for incomparable research questions, due to different energy adjustment strategies? We looked at an illustrative sample. The answer was all of them! Delighted to share our new meta-scientific review, led by @nataliaortega.bsky.social 👇

Meta-analyses of dietary exposures must consider energy adjustment: recommendations from a meta-scientific review
Abstract. In observational studies of dietary exposures, the energy adjustment strategy directly alters the effect being estimated. Adjusting for total ene

My favourite moment of @nataliaortega.bsky.social's talk was when she said you can find a nutrition meta analysis to support whatever argument you want to make about diet and health!
Picture of slide from Natalia Ortega's talk, including examples of meta analyses with contradictory conclusions.

Nice clear presentation of commonplace meta-analysis failure mode: Pooling coefficients that mean different things, because original models had different adjustment sets. A coefficient gets its meaning from the whole model, not just from the predictor variable it multiplies.
screenshot of a presentation slide. Title reads "The 8 Meta-analyses", and then a box showing "0/8 stated a target causal effect of interest".

Meta-analyses in nutrition may pool estimates for completely incomparable effects without realising it, just because of whether/how energy intake is adjusted. @nataliaortega.bsky.social will explain why, share results from a meta-scientific review & offer recommendations for ways forward 👇

My talk on "depicting determinstic variables within DAGs" is now online. The talk explains how DAGs can be used to help with understanding & estimating causal effects involving derived variables (e.g. BMI) & compositional data (e.g. nutrition data). #EpiSky #CausalSky youtu.be/upj20Pw8jTU?...
