And let's not forget that cars themselves presumably exist so the company can keep all of the money customers pay without having to give any to a stablehand.

What proportion get new cars? If it's anything like the national average then less than 30%? Not far off 1/5 vs 4/5 who get higher education? So would a preference for the 70%+ who don't get new cars count against support for the car industry - even if this is ultimately outweighed by other factors?

They're recessions - but I think you've identified the causes: Kuwait invasion oil shock, .com bubble bursts, global financial crisis and finally covid pandemic.

Renault 5 is cute and has a baguette holder. Surely these are the main things to look for in an EV?

Symbian was bought by Nokia and, later, CSR by both Samsung and Qualcomm. I was part of the CSR chunk that went to Samsung, I guess he must have been in the remainder that went to Qualcomm.

The actor who played Carstairs, Nicholas Frankau, is a software engineer who also did Bluetooth stuff in Cambridge for Symbian and CSR. Sadly, I never worked with him, but vaguely remember him being part of a group drinking at the White Horse in Milton. But no idea how he managed fan photos.

Wasn't part of the point of using QE that interest rates were up against the lower bound and so, in a sense, artificially high? Presumably in those circumstances the bank would have welcomed a rise in the ideal interest rate - to make it less negative?

Because, if we assume interest rates don't change, then mortgages have a fixed nominal repayment rate? So this means that the higher the rate of inflation, the more front-loaded the repayments are? I'm guessing mortgages with a fixed real repayment rate would be too hard to deal with?

They mention inflation later, but presumably interest payments they show here go beyond just maintaining the value of the current debt? I guess I was thinking about ukandeu.ac.uk/dont-blame-d... Would subtracting the treading-water part of the payments be interesting, or am I getting confused?

The film's depiction of evil was also more interesting than I was expecting. As well as the devouring malevolence of Gwi-Ma, we also have his foot soldiers, and here it is much more human - a selfish, cowardly, and ultimately despairing compliance with subjugation.

The film is delightful and fun. Sony (also did Spiderverse) animation is great, and it has a more engaging story than might be expected from the title. When it comes to the songs, I personally prefer the gloating malice of My Idol, but Soda Pop's sunny subversiveness is just as sinister.

Very badly executed censorship. Search for just one of the words, then nothing, but 'racism equity gender' gives results. Evil and inept.

The costs of Labour's first budget will hit those on lower incomes hardest. I get the politics, and realise that there is also the good that comes from increased revenue, but this is still somewhat depressing.

Anyway, although I'm being rather critical, I think it's a good, interesting read about stuff that matters, even if I'm a bit skeptical of the universality of the diagnosis and the efficacy of the cures.

The issue he described for Amazon seems much more like monopsony - but from a naive user's perspective, it feels to me like its service is at least as good as it always was. So I think, at least for those skeptical of revolution, it's hard to shoehorn Amazon into the same category.

And are the issues with Facebook/Twitter/TikTok/Amazon really that similar? My main issue with Facebook seems is the very low SNR. Twitter and TikTok seem to amplify extreme views. And Facebook too, but for me that is all lost in the noise. Perhaps Twitter and TikTok are just at an earlier stage?

I think the difficulty is few people will pay for it, and the ways to make money from it are destructive. I'm sure there is a better balance, but I'm not sure how much better it would really be if it were still making money?

I imagine Libertarians may object, as his proposals involve governments/unions, and the two people he blames left office 1/3 century ago. But I'm also skeptical his cures would salvage something like Facebook.

‘Enshittification’ is coming for absolutely everything
The term describes the slow decay of online platforms such as Facebook. But what if we’ve entered the ‘enshittocene’?
