A singing bird in spring is your best chance after seeing one in the hand of a ringer. Finding a silent skulker in autumn is always a buzz. If you haven't seen one by next autumn contact me and come to a ringing session. Almost g'teed in August.

Finding a Grasshopper Warbler and a Dartford Warbler in the nettles at Lytchett Bay tonight was reminiscent of birding an offshore island. Maybe not news breakers but great autumn local patch jewels. @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social @harbourbirds.bsky.social

I try & stay out of politics on Bluesky. However, anybody who cares about the environment & our wildlife needs to seriously think about why they would vote for any of the right wing parties that plan to scrap our environmental & wildlife protections

Nostalgic morning around the Kersal area of Salford. Lived here 40+ years ago. All signs of our accommodation and pubs gone but the green space and River Irwell much improved. Some very enjoyable city birding. 46sp in little over an hour & a half. ebird.org/checklist/S3...

On slight detour was very worthwhile en route to Manchester. The adult Baird's Sandpiper was showing off at Burleydam Pool, Audlem, Cheshire. Happy with my Mountain Mag digiscoping adapter. 😁

Dark morph juv Long-tailed Skua off West Bex this morning. Very close in and not attempting to fly suggesting poor energy reserves or illness... it continued to drift east when we left it around 9.30am.

Guess since most are 1CY they don't know what is ahead and don't want to take the risk. They are also nocturnal migrants hence natural behaviour is to stop migrating, feed and rest. 🤔

In Dorset, birds often find themselves overshooting south in the breeze and find themselves over the channel at dawn. They then reorientate and make landfall at first opportunity into the northerly breeze. Portland, Durlston, Hengistbury, perfect places to witness this. #myinterpretation

Sadly the total number of observers of the first 5 species is only 9. Snow Bunting (4), Bee-eater (2), Black Kite (1), Golden Oriole (2) and Quail (0). We don't want to be ungrateful but at least one could have been more giving. No local lister has connected with more than one 😱 Take the postive 😀

Think you did a lot better on the water. Our 8 hr trip around the headlands was blown out by a storm. Instead we were confined to the inner fjord for 4 hours & we didn't reach any seabird colonies. 😥 Win some, lose some. 👍 Looking forward to catching up on HI this autumn and hearing all about it. 👍

A casual walk through some woods in Kenai, Alaska suddenly became unforgettable when we were alerted by some mobbing Varied Thrushes to the arrival of this monster...American Goshawk. A totally unexpected lifer. It posed for 10 minutes before vanishing into the forest. 😀
