"The Renaissance" is not a result of a linear "revolution". It was a medieval phenomenon, rooted in ideas circulating for centuries (Giotto was born c. 1267). The Middle Ages had multiple periods of seeing "classical" ideas as fashionable. Works like Vitruvius were widely read and influential. 1/

one thing that fascinates me about the modern techbro-fascist movement is their complete fascination with destroying their own personhood. previous fascist movements flirted with it, sure, but they always promised an elevation of the human spirit through obedience and submission to the state

To those saying ‘the NHS is a bottomless pit of money’ please take a look at this graph from the commonwealth fund, (an independent think tank in Washington that assesses different healthcare systems) in 2024. We spend less than many comparable countries on health.

Oh, it is this time of year again: did people in medieval Europe have a different relationship with work and free time than we do? Yes, of course. Did they just lie around half of the year doing nothing and enjoying their church-prescribed holidays and basked in their free time? No. 1/

Book cover for "Song of the Wild Knight — Song of the Squire" by LJ Amber. The cover is displayed against the sunset lesbian/sapphic flag. The cover features the silhouette of two women embracing in woodland, outlined against a sunset, one taller than the other, the shorter with obviously long, elven ears. Scattered around the glade are pieces of armour in green, a white dress, a pair of glasses, and the hilt of a sword with a curved, moon-shaped cross guard. The title and author's name are depicted in warm, orange hues, while the scene contrasts the bright, golden oranges of the sunset with the dark greens and browns of the forest. It looks warm, intimate, but not intrusive, and feels as though it was painted with a feminine gaze. The book blurb for the novel "Song of the Wild Knight — Song of the Squire."

How can Elly become a knight? She isn’t ready. She isn’t quick, she isn’t graceful, and the other squires dance around her, winning every match.

Behind everyone’s perfect smiles, Elly feels like the elves are laughing at her — a lumbering half-elf woman, with ridiculous glasses.

Worst of all is Nyuvorlas. He’s swift, he’s deft, and he’s the kind of grinning, vicious bully who shouldn’t be knighted. Thanks to him, Elly knows she’ll never be good enough, never be welcome...

...And the way things are, she’ll never know companionship, either.

Yet in the depths of the forest, a mysterious woman has taken an interest in the half-elf. And if Ceistyl has her way, Elly will realise her own strength, see her own beauty, and gain the self-worth she always deserved.

A lot can change in a single, wild night.

“We see Elly not just explore new territory physically but also emotionally ... It’s touching and yet playful and I found myself really rooting for Elly, and seeing her in myself. An genuinely incredible debut by L J Amber ...”

Five stars.

“I felt the author did a wonderful job pulling us into Elly's world. She made me want to see Elly succeed and learn to love herself ... The way the author described things made me feel like I was there.”

Four stars.

Were there really barbarians in Mainz in 406? What was "news" in late antiquity? In case you missed it, my new open access paper that rethinks the founding events of the end of the Roman empire in light of female agency and the understanding of history. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
This article revisits Jerome’s treatment of the Rhine crossings of 406 in his letter to the widow Geruchia, and the broader issue of breaching the Roman limes. It argues that his description of the events in Gaul and on the border was framed to fit his notion of the history of salvation. Placing Jerome’s letter to Geruchia in its historical and theological setting, the paper questions the role of contemporary historical details in its composition. Jerome’s account was shaped by hearsay, memory, and tropes from other authors, including Ammianus Marcellinus, alongside the ways that Jerome thought about time, truth, and gender. In this way, the paper casts a new light on what we can say about the early fifth-century invasion of Gaul. The events of 406 are prone to misinterpretation without an analysis of Jerome’s philosophy of history. It is difficult to trust the testimony of a man who did not consider it his obligation to report on events in a manner of a historian and who made it clear he will rehash existing literary tropes to make a point. Thus, in a sense, it may be pointless to argue what Jerome knew about the upheavals in Gaul and the crossing of the Rhine in 406 – or if there even was a crossing. Jerome knew the bells were ringing but had no idea in which church. Fortunately for him, he read a lot and was willing to display this knowledge in a letter to a rich widow, aimed at convincing her not to remarry. Whatever Jerome delivers is due to Geruchia’s or her female relatives’ decision to ask him for advice – and it may just be what she wanted to receive. Removing her agency from this account skews its interpretation. We have to entertain the possibility that Geruchia and her circle used Jerome’s exegetical hubris to their own ends. Under pressure from the extended familia and domus they needed a way out – a way that Jerome delivered, perhaps unwittingly. This does not mean that nothing happened in Gaul in 406 or that Jerome had simply no idea about what was going on. However, including a broader interpretative context shows that the description delivered by Jerome is at best a chain of literary repetition inserted into a highly gendered text. The destruction of Mainz, the lynchpin of Jerome’s account, the only city for which he offers any detail, matches surprisingly closely with Ammianus’ description of a similar incursion, supported by Jerome’s own administrative knowledge and perhaps the memory of his youth spent at Trier. Jerome’s account is a literary exercise, which includes a show of ethnographic knowledge, listing peoples that may not even have existed. The purported Rhine crossing of 406 and the subsequent upheavals in Gaul are impossible to understand without the analysis of this context. The Alemanni, Alans, Sueves, and Vandals might have pillaged along the Rhine and in Gaul, but first and foremost they roamed Jerome’s mind.

nora: people in Cardiff, Wales have been out in numbers protesting Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people every Saturday for six months now, with no sign of stopping. we pushed the Senedd to call for a ceasefire, & now we want the UK government to cease arms sales to Israel. Free Palestine!
crowd of Palestine protestors marching towards Cardiff Castle, holding placards and Palestinian flags. one placard reads "end the 75 year occupation-oppression-apartheid"shot from above of a Palestine march reaching its endpoint. there are many people with placards and Palestinian flags, walking together in a pedestrianised area lined with shops. in front of them a banner saying "UK Weapons Kill" has been laid on the floor and surrounded by children's shoes. there are a considerable number of police around. the frame is bisected by a ring-shaped metal sculpture in the foreground.

If there are two things the illegal regime is good at, it’s harming Palestinian bodies when they can’t defend themselves, and finding new lows for the west to justify.
