We've figured it out since then! There were barely over 50 kākāpō but now we have 235! Aotearoa is a real study in introduced species because the human introduction is so recent! There were no mammals (but bats) before 1250 and then only rats and dogs until the 1700s They did then get wild with it

One Knight Stand by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner 💅8/10 pregnant whimsical horse 🐎 Man the writers are having a blast, and so am I! Lots of fun, pretty silly but plenty of heart. Can mostly by summarised by mr incredible "I'm not...strong enough" and a big octopus.

The Examiner by Janice Hallett 👻6/10 ghosts in the machine🏫 @fkth.bsky.social and I have suffered at the hands of moodle and this was absolutely that. Slow as its epistolary but plenty in there, just felt like it sort of dissolved at the final hurdle by squashing its own stakes. (Secret nukes 🫪)

How to Cheat Your Own Death by Kristin Perrin 🥩9/10 steak experiments🥩 Ugh she got me with the mutual yearning slow burn dammit. Probably my favourite of the 3, very well shaped characters with their own mysteries, nicely balanced with interpersonal b plot. An artist mother I recognise a bit much

How to Seal Your Own Fate by Kristin Perrin 🐈8/10 china cats🐈 I really enjoyed book 1, when it was the only book. Accidentally picked up book 3 and had to back track to find 2! These mysteries are nicely twisty and I am ready for slowburn detectivism. In places it could do with a sharper edit tho

Killer in Paradise by Tom Hindle 💠6/10 unrelated poisons🍎 Tom Hindle has a good nose for mess. Unfortunately sometimes I think he doesn't trust the audience. The foreshadowing is so heavy every twist is spoiled. Good characters, strong attempts and much better than some of his others but... eh🫤

The Iron Heart by Nina Varela 🩸6/10 of course the magical powersource is people🙃 Listen you can just write a "heres what you missed on glee" for part one rather than restating everything that happened in book one during book two. Clunky! -2pts for multiple deus ex machina, +1pt for girl kissing.

The Midnight Shift by Cheon Seon-Ran 🧦6/10 favourite socks🧦 A gift which I got halfway through, left on a train (with padella leftovers 😫) and then had to secretly replace. It's a nicely ponderous mystery, with vampires, but I kind of felt it welched on it's premise in the end. Scuffed the landing

Hell Bent by Leigh Bardugo 😈8/10 yuppies in the basement🤑 Turns out there's more! Good strong characters and more mystery. Feels like she's considering jumping the shark at points, and could do with an extra map I think? Also I am discovering the authors thinly disguised romantic archetype.

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo 💀9/10 prognostications👻 A really fun slow build that drops you in the middle of a complex underbelly of ritual, power and magic. A good scrappy protagonist who is not that into lore forces the reader to scrape for clues in a really fun way. Intensely layered plotting.
