For basically 15 years their design philosophy has been "lets just do this because it's cool and something else we like does it :)" with no thought into how that fits into everything else they're doing, and "It's really scary if the player isn't engaged at all moments :(" and it eventually worked. 😭

The best part of every demon soul boss being so different was that every one of them was broken in a dif way. Sometimes you could just shoot them without getting anywhere near them. Sometimes they couldn't handle you just standing still. sometimes magic just outpaces their regeneration. Funny stuff.

Honestly I think it's good in Dark Souls. I think most of those games would be worse without that ability. Exploring actually requires you to engage with the game, because you need to KEEP running for it to work. Once you need to travel, or do a boss runback, it becomes a new optimization puzzle.

You can remove this, but removing this creates a vacuum that needs to be replaced by something else. Your enemy design otherwise better be tight as hell, or you better have other ways to force the player to engage with combat. The general idea that it's just 'archaic' is so silly. ITS A PLATFORMER.

That's among it! Honestly while I don't think not having it is intrinsically bad, the general trend away from it I think is a negative. These are platformers, about jumping, and mobile hitboxes are a tool that make players solve problems with the inherent tool of the genre.
