On similar lines, if we’re not careful: A. Scientific journals will only accept submissions from established researchers working within institutions. B. Data we’ve spent ages making open will be hidden to avoid the expense of continued download by bots.

context. sentiment. inferences. People seriously cannot do these things anymore. That’s why they angrily demand you spell out every joke, every reference, super duper promise you mean something only this one prescribed way. They cannot do it for themselves or tolerate the any ambiguity.

DoorDash spent $1.4M trying to stop Zohran Mamdani from becoming mayor. This week's historic $131.5M enforcement action against DoorDash for underpaying NYC delivery workers shows why. Yet another reminder that the only thing that can beat organized money is organized people.

DoorDash Spent $1.4 Million Trying to Stop Mamdani From Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why.
In a wage-theft settlement, DoorDash now has to pay its workers around 100 times what it spent trying to beat Zohran Mam

in many cases it's the attempt to shift social class for increased credibility being used as the gotcha - Robinson's swap from his hyphenated name to his new one for example. it's still probably not a reasonable thing for us to hammer on about, but the working class cosplay vibe is what icks I feel.

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”
APStylebook @APStylebook

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

I found out about this because someone told me that the character, 'Lechsinka' (which is very much not a real Polish name) supposedly does not understand the word 'detective.' And the Polish word for that is......... 'detektyw.'

One thing my parents (who taught me to cook) always stressed to us is the importance of being able to adapt to dietary needs of all types, including on the fly. People eating at my house aren’t eating a separate dish; I will just change what I’m cooking to work for everyone.

find something as close as you can to a fit, then widen violently with these. I've been able to very substantially widen shoes this way, especially with the application of a bit of heat/moisture.

It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.
Bobby Mars on Twitter writes: "If you wear a collared shirt and nice shoes out to the bar in the rust belt, multiple people will ask you if you just came from a wedding. Aesthetic standards for men’s attire are horrendously low"

the concentration of women in the open category is still climbing which is testament to this success of this approach - a women-only category and an open category. I agree it feels icky but it was done with good intentions and the outcomes have been broadly good imo

chess was an old boy's club so women had a shit time socially in those spaces. bc of this women didn't play chess as much as men and so weren't competitive. women's chess became a thing to get around this, more women played chess, the demographic became competitive, now segregation seems less vital

hearing about "creating jobs" should radicalize people like, universally we understand that "make work" is bad, and yet "make job" is good?? our system requires making more work for us to waste our time doing when there isn't actually much work required to sustain our society

yes. I completely agree. but what do you propose we do with those who have wronged us? they've already tried perpetual incarceration and forced expulsion themselves - I think those are bad strategies. we're left with deprogramming.

I feel this, the hippienazis are real. I'm suggesting that some % of this crowd is "better than lost cause" material, maybe swayed by a progressive figure taking topics like pollution, food standards, pharmamoney seriously. these are ultimately social issues we (progressives) do care about

I'm noting that these groups are both dangerously misguided in similar ways but are aligned with opposite political factions - which might imply AOC courting MAHA voters isn't as bad or surprising as it sounds. crunchy left eugenics also bad, don't get me wrong.

roam a lot & have EE for personal and Three for work. I've found EE to be many many times better cell coverage-wise, but their app fails to work properly ~60% of the time and it's a pain to make roaming work properly. on balance I still choose EE for sure, but there are substantial annoyances

I don't know you, but appreciate your arguments against AI. I hate Al. I love humanity and wish the tech bros would focus on how to make us and our planet better. For them it's all about money. It really has to stop.
But I have to say, you're kinda sounding like a lunatic in this email. Why not dial it back a bit so your influence can be really credible and make more of a difference for us all.
