Have you seen this? It's no masterpiece but worth a look, a good period piece in fact, it pops up for free on Youtube every so often...

It sounds daft now, but hearing those clanging 10-minute Fall songs - was this Prog Rock!?! - on late night radio for the first time when my folks had gone to bed, and while my school pals were still listening to 2-Tone & Deep Purple, did seem very clandestine & exciting...

They used to start their gigs with this in early '83 - I'd love to hear a comp of the different versions.

I first tuned in to hear (& tape) New Order's 2nd session in June '82. The first Fall session I heard was the MASSIVE March '83 one which honestly blew my mind - that version of "Garden" is still my favourite ever performance by them. By that point I was listening most nights & taping everything...

The Fall didn't really enter my consciousness until '82, when I started irregularly listening to Peel. The first song I remember hearing by them was "Look! Know" but I didn't own it 'til later. They got a few mentions in Smash Hits before that though, it even printed the lyric to "New Face In Hell"!

Side 2 was a bit of an endurance test at first, but of course it hypnotised me and sucked me in. His lyrics on the first side are so funny, along with his band's ramshackle boogie it definitely prepared me for The Fall.

Highway 61 Revisited is probably a better album, but I heard BIABH much earlier - side one blew my teenage mind while the second expanded it. Bob '65 = Prince of Snot!

It's the first pop record I owned, my mum bought it for me from the Co-Op because I was enjoying those summer holiday repeats of their old TV series so much, and I still stand by every single song on it. It's been re-released a few times since but this is the sleeve mine came in. Listen To The Band!

It's a fantastic box-set, Jon. I'm strictly limiting myself to one disc per day to avoid (ahem) premature evaluation.

Argh. Teenage memories flooding back of waiting for the Saturday evening bus back home from town, carrying a bag of new records and praying the lurking local peanut heads don't notice me.

Ta, I had no idea there was a Mixing It session. And now you've got me pining for the days of Sandall and Russell - when you think how pathetically cheap that programme must've cost to produce (pence, surely?) it does still make you wonder why the BBC saw fit to cancel it...

Serious question: what's your opinion of the oodles of bonus material - worthwhile additions or play-once filler?

It's one of the best double LPs ever, right up there with Zen Arcade for me. My CD is very old, a late '80s pressing, sounds a bit thin, etc. I'm tempted by the much later 2cd reissue - remastered with 20(!) extra tracks, and it wasn't very expensive last time I looked either?

All this country’s most important people lined up to declare that Boris Johnson was the man of the moment, the PM the country cried out for, when they were required to do it. Trust me: if these clowns are called on to salute Kemi as our disastrously online new fuhrer, they will do it obediently.

Turbo '80s innit? The entire LP is bang on - at least half of its songs could've been singles.

I'm not a mega-fan or anything, but the LP that single was taken from is an absolute classic - "Magic" is a bit of a strange shoo-in though, the rest of it is pretty dark (I love it, of course).

They're still ridiculously underrated - I've never seen them live but (at least) a couple of their LPs are bona fide classics.

He's married to the Graun's editor, which is probably how he gets away with stuff like this - he's well on the way to elevating the inane to an art-form I reckon?

I bought it at the time (from Woolworths!) because I'd seen the song-words in Smash Hits, & something about them & the accompanying photo piqued my interest - I'd only heard *of* Joy Division at that point. Spring 1981 - big changes afoot, my musical world was about to explode into technicolour...
