Ark wants to make it so that you don’t need UGS. That’s why it has concept of stable builds, build flags to get information about your builds right on the changelist history. It’s also planned to have artefacts, so that you can have for example build machines do builds for certain team members.

Tired of Git / Git Hub? Want to bring sanity and performance to your version control? Introducing Ark HUB! It is a spartan version control hosting solution for Ark VCS, aimed at high performance / reliability, currently supporting private repositories.
Welcome to Ark Hub, an official cloud service from the people behind Ark VCS. It is meant as a fair take on cloud services, so we do things differently.

Ark Hub's goal is to run high performance and availability Ark servers for those not interested in shelf hosting.

All servers come with 5GB for free. There is no price per user, the cost is purely based on extra storage. Ark licenses still apply, so if you have annual revenue / funding above €200.000, you'll need to get a business license.

If at any point you decided you want to self host, a zip with your server will be provided.

Your data is yours. There are no partners to Ark Hub nor any kind of AI training.

I'm not saying you shouldn't develop clis or that you should always use UI, they are a useful feature and you may prefer that workflow, I mean it shouldn't be the driving development of any tool with complex information, it should be a stripped down version of the UI version.
000
Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
Same with showing state. Imagine if htop was done as a set of cli commands, it would be horrible experience.
000
Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
And it prevents you from doing things that cli just isn't made to support well. For example, in my vcs somebody can request the lock from somebody else and that gets brought up as an in app notification, you can't do such systems gracefully with cli, it's just too different.
100
Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
It's not just that, it's for example not having access to state, because the cli has a do-thing() api, and you can't get a way to see the progress for example. It's quite a big problem with UIs built on top of cli, and then you have the UI showing just a random thinking animation.
100
Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
That's not how it works. When you have cli developed as the main target, you expose the things that make sense to it, because you're not even thinking about UI. I'm not saying you can't then expose these in cli, but it requires a feedback loop that generally is not there.
010
Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
because cli is always a subset of gui.
000
Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
This is because of the development paradigm ppl follow, which is a bad one. Apps like Git get developed cli first and then UI is bolted on top. Something built this way cannot be fast nor provide you with good feedback loops. Apps should be done gui first, and then cli is a view of it

Agree, unfortunately it's the business model these days. That's why Ark is the way it is, because it's how I'd like to be treated as a customer. Pro self hosting, no mandatory cloud services, easy to migrate, free for indies and perpetual licenses for businesses.

Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 26/06/2026
Thanks. Like Ark, the cloud version will be an unconventional approach. It will be dedicated hardware with NVME disks and ECC RAM. The goal is to provide high performance / uptime servers. It will have 5GB free storage, and then you pay for extra storage, not per user.

If you need to work with binaries, I highly recommend you get away from Git. Every team I know using git-lfs eventually runs into issues, and the bigger the team the more often it happens. Check out ark-vcs.com and live a happy life.

YESSS! This is the baseline latency we should expect from a CI pipeline. Nice to see what can be done when you're in control and not github actions or whatever. (The time it takes for the little package icon to turn white or red is the duration my VPS takes to compile and run a trivial c file)

On top of that, from the same GUI application, you can then perform maintenance to free memory / disk resources, for both the client and the server.
110
Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
And these get automatically sent out to the clients during operation, so you never get caught off guard about a disk being full.
110
Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
It allows you to set limits for storage usage, and warnings for low free disk space.
100
Nuno Afonso @nafonsopt.bsky.social · 29/05/2026
But it doesn't stop there, this carries over to the server too. You quite often need cli commands - some times ran on the server machine - to get this kind of data, but with Ark it's all accessible from the client GUI in real time.

Perforce has a lot of problems but they aren’t really the users fault, they are design flaws and the fact that it was made to have people that manage it full time to handle all the bumps on the road. I’d recommend you trying ark-vcs.com, it’s far more pleasant to work with than perforce.

The problem is that this breaks lifetime and connection between both, it creates another point of technical complexity, maintenance. You ideally want to have everything under the same roof, and almost always centralized www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSnI...

looked a bit more into how Ark VCS has evolved, and there are really cool features! For example you can have your CI system annotate changelists (commits) with "build flags" (really build status). That will show a little icon next to the commit that can be clicked to open the corresponding build.

Here are the cool Ark VCS icons from my post yesterday: You can specify path rules in Ark that map to names and icons, so when you're looking at the history you can easily see which commits have certain types of content. It's mostly a fun thing for now but I think it can become quite useful. :)
