I think I get it now. When I read retrieval practice, I'm thinking of the practice of retrieval. I guess you mean the retrieval of the practice. Right?

¡Eduquemos! 😘

Can learning be forgotten? Can there be learning without understanding? If it's forgotten, was it merely memorization?

Understanding needs thinking and thinking needs an effort. Our brain is efficient and rejects doing efforts. Knowing feels cheaper than understanding. Students will naturally try to know without understanding. It's our job to force them to think and understand.

Nacho Santa-María Megía @nacheteer.nachosm.com · 11/06/2026
They mix them up. They say "I don't understand it" after reading a problem. When asked about it, they add "I don't understand how to do it". And it's either that they don't understand the wording/formulation (understanding) or that they don't know how to solve it (knowledge). Or both.

I'm looking forward to reading it. My take is that knowledge is built while understanding is made. Both of them share that connections need to be made in order to achieve either. But knowledge can happen involuntarily while understanding needs to be sought.

Last Friday I watch @peterliljedahl.bsky.social in Madrid thanks to @innovamat.bsky.social and this is what I learned: www.nachosm.com/blog-en/free... #MTBoS #ITeachMath #MathEDU
The image shows a monkey playing around inside the head of a student and an arrow pointing towards another student's head where a monkey switched on the light and shows books, a laptop, a suitcase.. The first student is faded and the second is colourful with a smile like thinking.

Don't you think it might depend on the goal? If the goal is to learn how to solve some kind of problems/exercises, then studying worked ones surely works best, but if the goal is to understand/comprehend.. What do you think of www.researchgate.net/publication/... ?

Mmm... I'd think that to take out frustration, it's the struggle what should be removed. So, maybe, you could say that you can build fraction sense without struggle. If you want to name frustration, maybe a "... without struggle and unnecessary frustration" could be added. IMO.

Thinking about problem solving, it's unavoidable that it feels hard. If it's not hard, it might not be a problem at all. This theory, then, aligns with the idea of problem solving being naturally frustrating. The brain is trying to avoid doing something that has to be done, that's frustrating.

Scaffolding shouldn't be lowering the ceiling for the sake of reaching it. The goal is not getting to the end, it's the path what matters. Let the students struggle through their learning, without taking your eyes off. It should be about setting up a safety net rather than more comfortable stairs.
