Last Friday I watch @peterliljedahl.bsky.social in Madrid thanks to @innovamat.bsky.social and this is what I learned: www.nachosm.com/blog-en/free... #MTBoS #ITeachMath #MathEDU
The image shows a monkey playing around inside the head of a student and an arrow pointing towards another student's head where a monkey switched on the light and shows books, a laptop, a suitcase.. The first student is faded and the second is colourful with a smile like thinking.

I was interviewed for my school's Newsletter and I translated it. #EduSky #MathSky www.nachosm.com/blog-en/inte...
Excerpt from the interview highlighting a phrase from the book "Learning to love Math" that states "No other school subject pushes emotional buttons the way math does".

Cita de "How the brain learns mathematics" por David A. Sousa
"Students in the elementary grades are still interested in their studies, and
the arithmetic they need to learn is achievable without too much effort.
They generally maintain a positive attitude toward mathematics in these
grades. But attitudes change when students get into middle school and
high school, where mathematics is taught by subject-area teachers and the
coursework is more demanding. Teachers now hear many students saying,
“I don’t like math!” There are several reasons for this emotional response
to secondary-level mathematics. One reason is due to what is generally
termed “math anxiety.” We will discuss math anxiety in greater detail in
Chapter 7. For now, we will note that anxiety triggers an increase in corti-
sol—the stress hormone—in the blood, and that produces an unwelcome
and uncomfortable mental state."

As the school adopts a comprehension-based approach for teaching maths, it was a surprise the resistance showed by a number of families. The changes include using manipulatives and alternative algorithms to the traditional ones. After reading to Judy Willis, I guess it's not surprising.
Cite from the book "Many parents of today's students learned math by doing worksheets and drills, and they expect the same for their children. Parents who were successful in math through repeated memorization skills (rather than strong concept development) may resent alternative math instruction, such as inquiry and manipulatives, for their children. A possible result is that some parents may feel frustrated when they can't help their children with the unfamiliar homework."Book cover of the book "Learning to love math" by Judy Willis

Hola!
