A little satellite work done this morning 1700-1800 UTC. AO-91 appears dead on a 55 deg pass. FO-29 was loud and clear on an 18-deg pass. The footprint passed over KH6, UA0, JA/HL, BA, UA, and Scandinavia. No replies to my CQ. 😢 My downlink peaked at S7.

I watched a merlin (a small falcon) attack a Canada jay today. Merlins normally hunt birds on the fly in open areas. Today it was in a birch, aspen, spruce treeline. Jay used thick branches/needles in the spruce to foil attacks even separated by just a few feet. My own National Geographic channel.

I visited the North Pole (AK) library today for the first time. I had some time to kill while waiting to retrieve a dog from the vet. Let me say it’s a phenomenal facility! Well done, FNSB. I needed a new library card, and I selected it as my primary location. I’ll be back soon.

Satellite RS-44 netted two JA contacts this morning on a 16-degree pass. I used FT-4 and Skyroof by Alex VE3NEA. You’ll often find me on linear transponders using CW or FT4 at low elevation. I have a lot of obstructions north and west of my antennas, but there’s the odd chance for QSOs with Asia/EU.

I’m of a certain age at which friends die more frequently. I woke up to news of another one’s death after a brief illness. She was one who skillfully projected her love of life and commitment to help others in words and photos online. So well-admired and loved. There’s a huge gap now. RIP Mary. 💔

More exciting things in the sky this morning. An F35 out of Eielson AFB had a bird strike. Lost an engine, declared an emergency, returned quickly. The responders on the ground reported some wing damage, too. I imagine even a tiny dent costs $$$$$ to repair.
