Inordinately excited about this year's forthcoming John Clare Society Journal, featuring cover art by Tracey Bush, & new writing from @victoriaxiaoxiaoma.bsky.social, Richard O'Brien - @notrockyhorror.bsky.social - Martin Kratz, Cassie Falke, Jens Peters, & an index of publications, & reviews.
Art by Tracey Bush called "Dandelion" from her Nine Wild Plants Project. Tracey explains that ‘this is an ongoing exploration of consumerism and lost knowledge. The project began after reading ecological thinkers, including Paul Hawken, who notes that the average Western adult can recognise over 1000 brand names or logos, but fewer than ten local, indigenous plants. Nine life-size collage drawings from my list of most recognised wild plants, include the Lesser Celandine, Lawn Daisy, Field Poppy, Cowslip, Dandelion, Meadow Buttercup, Dog Daisy, Dog Rose and Hybrid Bluebell. My own herbarium sheets, made from wild plants collected on road verges and other “edgelands”, were the templates for hand drawn silhouettes. I
then collaged fragments of found materials illustrating hundreds
of brands and logos. A new set of drawings with branded paper
packaging collage is featured in the curated exhibition Flowers
Forever in the München Kunsthalle der HypoKulturstiftung
(with catalogue). The exhibition tours to Hamburg, Rome and is
currently on exhibition in the Kunsthal Rotterdam’.Contents List of the John Clare Society Journal, July 2026:

Trans-species Empathy in John Clare’s ‘The Pettichaps Nest’ and Anna Letitia Barbauld’s ‘The Caterpillar’ by Cassandra Falke

Anxious Tree s Give Leaf: Reading John Clare in Lockdown by Martin Kratz

John Clare Reaches the Pacific, poem by Richard O’Brien

The Phenomenology of Walking in John Clare’s Poems by Xiaoxiao Ma

On this day in 1841 John Clare completed the final leg of his 80 mile walk. He woke delirious with hunger and resorted to eating grass by the side of the road. A coin from a passerby this afternoon enabled the purchase of some bread and cheese.

The third day of Clare’s walk home. His account becomes less coherent and more fearful. He feared losing his way again so stuck close to the Great North Road. Exhausted he slept in a ditch by the side of the road. claresescape.com/john-clares-...

On this day in 1841, Clare woke in the shed after an unsettling dream. He took to the road but his shoes were falling apart. Hungry, he resorted to begging for any spare change but most passers by avoided him. As night fell, he hid again by the road near Potten, but was unable to stand the cold.
