Each generation inherits a little less nature and somehow learns to call it normal. Our grandparents remember rivers teeming with fish. Our parents remember trees filled with birds. Today, children grow up amidst concrete, plastic, smoke, heat, and silence.

This Friday we are continuing our #FindsFriday work experience selection. In July we asked work experience students to pick their favourite item from the museums display, so today's Finds Friday is The Marlborough Bucket.
The smaller fragments of the Marlborough bucket. It shows the top part of a face with the bottom half missing. There is the back end of a horse and the last section shows parts of two figures coming together The side profile of a face from a remaining section of the marlborough bucket Also of a side profile of a face with part of the lower chin area missing

They call them resurrection gates, call them lychgates – from the old Saxon word for corpse. They are ghost thresholds. Haunted by the dead who passed through to burial. Haunted by the ringing of invisible corpse bells. In their shade we feel sense of perpetual wake. – Dr. M. Benn

Simply beautiful: Late Neolithic and early Bronze Age flint daggers found in Saxony-Anhalt, 2300-1600 BC (Unétice-Culture). On display at Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte, Halle. 📷️ me
Five finely crafted flint daggers are displayed vertically against a black background. Each blade features unique flaking patterns and subtle variations in shape and color, ranging from light grey to tan, highlighting their prehistoric craftsmanship. The lighting emphasizes the texture and contours of each blade, making them stand out distinctly against the dark backdrop.

A little Roman octopus to wish you a happy week! 🐙❤️ From a Roman villa mosaic at Villaquejida, León, Spain. Limestone, AD 100-200. Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid 📷 by me #MosaicMonday #Archaeology
My photo shows a mosaic fragment from the floor of a Roman villa in Spain, dated AD 100-200s. It depicts a stylised octopus using red, yellow, white, and black limestone tesserae, against an off-white background. The front-facing octopus appears almost cartoon-like, with a large red and white head and body outlined in black. Its yellow circular eyes are outlined in black with a central black dot which stare out at the viewer. Below the head and body are eight writhing arms.

This octopus and other fragmentary animal mosaics were discovered in the 19th century at the Hermitage of Santa Colomba, Villaquejida, León, which had been built on the site of a Roman villa.

Something beautiful for the weekend! An extraordinary Acheulean handaxe knapped around a fossil shell c. 500,000-300,000 years ago! The shell’s central display has been described as an example of aesthetic intention by the toolmaker. West Tofts, Norfolk. 📷 MAA Cambridge University #Archaeology
The photo shows an Acheulean biface handaxe knapped from dark grey flint with a creamy-white cortical layer, shown against a black background. The handaxe is roughly tear-drop shaped with a pointed tip and rounded bottom. There is a fossil shell centrally displayed on one face, identified as the Cretaceous bivalve mollusc Spondylus spinosus. Above the shell to the right is a small rectangular museum label. The toolmaker has knapped the flint in such a way as to retain the shell in a central position. Measurements 79mm x 35mm x 132mm Weight 0.375kg. Collections of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge.
