Hurricane Isaias is asymmetric and lopsided, due both to harsh upper-level winds and some dry air entrainment. Still, it's roiling with convection – thunderstorm activity – and will continue to organize as it works toward the Gulf Coast. Landfall Friday night/early Saturday.

Isaias becoming a hurricane on October 7 is notable for two other reasons. On this date in 2018, Hurricane Michael formed as a tropical depression. On this date in 2024, Hurricane Milton rapidly intensified into a Category 5 hurricane. Quite the date in hurricane history.

BREAKING: Isaias is now a Category 1 Hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Isaias becomes the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

MyRadar @myradar.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Even "just" a Category 1 storm can produce a significant surge along the northeastern Gulf. That's because of the bathymetry, or shape of the sea floor. The gently-sloping continental shelf makes it easy to push water inland, leading to a locally significant surge.

If you live in the red, it's time to ACT. That can mean different things depending on where you are. Follow the advice of local officials. Plan for hurricane-force winds at the coast and strong tropical storm winds inland. Hazardous coastal surge too.

Isaias appears to be strengthening steadily, and may be on its way to rapid intensification. It could even be a hurricane by late tonight, and teeter on the brink of major status tomorrow. It's a bit sheared, but still will become a significant storm.

Yes, the Google DeepMind model is indicating about a 40% chance that our nascent tropical system attains Category 3 strength over the Gulf. We're skeptical. We think the system – regardless of offshore strength – will be hastily weakening ahead of landfall due to harsh winds aloft.

While it IS true that a hurricane may form in the Gulf, there is some good news – IF it approached the U.S., it would be weakening. Harsh winds aloft would work to tear it apart, and dry air aloft would try to erode the circulation. Still, please stay abreast of the forecast!

We have the wind dynamics to support a few tornadoes in Kansas today... BUT there are a couple limiting factors. 1.) It's cloudy. That cuts back on daytime heating, reducing storm fuel. 2.) Storms will be tiny. Moist low-levels and low cloud bases will lead to small updrafts.

It's exceedingly rare to have FOUR days in a row with red zone "moderate" risks of flash flooding/excessive rainfall. Polo's tropical moisture will feed into a non-tropical weather system to produce widespread torrential rains and locally significant flooding.
