He hops in and begins to paddle to a neighboring island, hoping that by the time he returns, Ed will have calmed down enough to let him back into the cabin. For the time being, he’s put his bizarre graveside moment behind him.

He realizes that he shouldn’t have brought Izzy up with Ed being in such a particularly foul mood, as even on a good day, mentioning him can cause Ed to go distant or shut off entirely. Stede starts walking to the dinghy they keep tied up at the shore’s edge to get provisions.

Ed’s eyes darken, like a shark’s, as he heads to the kitchen. Stede realizes that’s where the knives are stored and has the foresight to turn tail and run back out of the cabin. He closes the door just as a cleaver is flung into the door.

Ed stares ahead blankly, past Stede’s head at a notch in the wood of the door. “Come to think of it, I must have been hearing things. Ignore me. I’m probably just hungry. Or tired. Or both!” Stede throws his hands up theatrically.

Ed drops the teacup onto the rug, which somehow allows it to roll under a chair unscathed. Ed sighs, clenching his fists, remaining silent. “Did you now?” “Well- it sounded…” Stede trails off, shifting his shoe on a squeaky floorboard before continuing “sounded like him.”

“I heard something. At the beach,” he rushes out, interrupting the next throw. Ed pauses, a teacup in hand, furrowing his brows. “What?” “I heard… I think…” “You heard what, Stede? Come out with it!” Ed snaps. “I think… I heard Izzy,” Stede says, putting his arms in front of his face.

“That’s a new record, mate. What were you gone, five minutes? Really gave me time to think about what I’ve done. Really learned my lesson.” Ed punctuates the last word with another piece of glassware hitting the doorframe. Stede flinches.

Unsteadily, stede trudges back up the path to the cabin, forgetting entirely the argument with Edward that had caused him to flee in the first place. Upon his re-entry to the front door, he is greeted with a vase being smashed an inch away from his face. “Ah, right,” he mutters to himself.

Stede whips his head around so quickly that he feels a tendon in his neck twang painfully. There is no one there. He shakes his head side to side quickly as if to will away the insanity he feels creeping in.

Jack’s smile is wiped from his face as he asks, “uh… is Izzy home?” “Jack! Yeah mate, hang on. He’s in the shower. Lemme tell ‘im you’re here”, Ed replies. Jack’s heart drops into his stomach and he hands over the flowers. “N-no need. Here. These were for him. See ya.” He runs to his truck.

So one day Jack comes by Izzy’s to surprise him with some sunflowers (Izzy had stared at them a moment too long in the farmer’s market and Jack had made a mental note to come back for some soon). He knocks on the front door and is surprised when Ed opens it, shirtless and in his octopus boxers.+
