The very specific satisfaction of your first flight being late, then finding out your connecting flight is at the same gate with the same aircraft 👌🏼 (but the connecting flight is now delayed, of course)

One of my favourite things about #ICOM is catching up with what my friends are working on! I ran between @frewecologist.bsky.social and @camilledelavaux.bsky.social’s talks. It made me realise we spend most our chats talking about grants we‘re writing, and experiments we’re planning - not results!

The 'heart' of the #Mycorrhiza #fungi #symbiosis is the arbuscule where plant and fungus exchange nutrients and carbon. Try the arbuscule growth simulator. Let me know how you adjust parameters to get the most beautiful arbuscules. schornacklabslcu.github.io/Arbuscule-Sim/

~1 billion times the distance from Earth to the Sun. That is approx the total length of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal hyphae in topsoils. These microscopic fungal networks form one of Earth’s circulatory systems moving carbon and nutrients. Out now in @science.org : lnkd.in/eKAsVN_Z

The accumulation of PFAS in plant tissues didn’t negatively affect the plant (biomass) or fungi (colonisation), but it may have consequences for the consumer, as PFAS bioaccumulates up the food chain. 🌾🥩🍽️

Our study published today suggests that mycorrhizal fungi might be contributing to crop plant PFAS accumulation, at least in some species. Durum wheat and barley shoots had higher PFAS concentrations when they were colonised by mycorrhizal fungi. Link: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Have you ever thought about what mycorrhizal fungi are doing with PFAS in the soil? We know these ‘friendly fungi’ can help their host plant tolerate soil heavy metal contamination and even immobilise microplastics. But PFAS are different because they’re water-soluble and highly mobile...

Unfortunately as researchers we can’t name names, one way or the other. The important points we’re trying to make with our research are: mycorrhiza products need far more stringent QC before being made available; and as consumers, that it’s safer to just not spend money on them, for now.

What are the major questions unanswered relating to arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi? It is just me, or are too many fundamentals still not resolved around some basic biology and ecology? Their genetics, their growth patterns, host-preferences, sporulation, and so on.
