a Mel King appreciation post 🫶 a fictional character as a catalyst for neurodivergent self-compassion? why not? #ThePitt #MelKing
A title slide with a black background and white and yellow text: "Dr.
Mel King is changing how I see myself...The Pitt." The handle @my.badass.brain is shown in smaller text. Below is a photo of Mel giving a small, earnest smile to someone off-camera. Her silhouette is outlined in white. In the top half of the image is a photo of Mel looking off-camera with an attentive, empathetic expression. Bottom half with black background and white text: “Seeing myself, mirrored: The way she holds herself, or plays with her hands. How soft-spoken she is, how she hesitates before speaking. How you can see on her face that she's always thinking. How deeply sensitive she is, and how she steps away to self-regulate when she's overwhelmed. What might resonate the most with my own experience is how Mel is liked by those around her, but still feels as if she's on the outside looking in."In the top half of the image is a photo of Mel and Langdon standing outside, exchanging a high-five. Bottom half with black background and white text: “What I see in Mel: I have so much love in my heart for Mel. I see her thoughtfulness, her gentleness, her earnest care. I see her softness as a strength and her social quirks as a sign of authenticity. I see her overwhelm and her loneliness, and I empathize with her. More than anything, I root for her."In the top half of the image is a photo of Mel hyping herself up in the ambulance bay. Bottom half with black background and white text: “The Mel test: I've started asking myself this question when I catch myself being very self-critical about my awkwardness or neurodivergent social quirks: Would I say that to Mel? Would I even think that about her? The answer is always no, and that prompts me to think, so why am I scolding myself for the same things?”

Seriously looking forward to seeing more of Al-Hashimi's journey next season. Kind of unique actually to follow a main character experiencing long-term effects of an illness be so often even in medical dramas it's a dramatic 1-2 episode arc and then everyone moves on. #ThePitt

It's true to real life, I guess, it's a real fear people have that saying it aloud will make it real or trigger something. But even the psychiatrist, Dr. Jefferson? SOMEONE PLEASE ASK HIM, at this point he is not being subtle anymore. 3/3

Being asked explicitly takes away some of that burden. When you're in that state, trying to reach out in small ways, but not willing to say "help me, I'm drowning”…The question can be a lifeline. I wonder why no one has asked Robby. 2/3

I was taught (in a basic mental health first aid class) that if someone is showing warning signs of suicidality, you should ask them directly if they're thinking of ending their life. In my experience, being a bit vague was a lot easier than coming right out and saying the words. 1/3 #ThePitt

awaiting a Very Important Call™ on a Pitt Thursday should be illegal. this level of anticipation is inhumane like not sure if i'm more invested in my own potential brain surgery or Robby's downward spiral #ThePitt

If you have not seen The Librarians or Leverage: Redemption I highly recommend them. For some of the absolute best Noah Wyle out there. he also directed one of my favourite episodes of all time of The Librarians where Drew Powell appeared which is why I cheered when he showed up on The Pitt.

jewish-joy:

I was atrociously late to a seder because of a hospital shift.

All to say, when my rabbi opened the door for Elijah, he yelped when I was on his door step with an appearance akin to surviving a war, a beyond exhausted expression, and an iced coffee larger than my head.

I didn't even register his surprise when I asked, still in the door way "Hey, could i have some wine?"

vaspider:

A photo of Dr Michael "Dr. Robby" Robinavitch from The Pitt sitting on the back lip of an ambulance and looking so tired. he is a tall handsome middle aged Ashkenazi Jewish man in black scrubs and dark blue zip up hoodie. Both Dr Robby and his actor Noah Wyle are for realsies Jewish. There is the lower half of a speech bubble drawn in as if to indicate that Dr. Robby said this.

I had surgery 3.5 years post-diagnosis. It went well. In a way, being told I would be having brain surgery felt like a relief. A frightening thing to navigate, but at least solid ground to walk on. In those years of waiting I had felt like the ground might give out under my feet at any moment. 5/6

Repeat MRI 1.5 years later showed my ventricles had enlarged by several mm. Still, I waited another two years. By the time I saw a neurosurgeon, l was told I needed surgery—soon. My eyes were now constantly misaligned (“are you aware your eyes are paralyzed?"), the headaches were relentless. 4/6

I had intermittent, fluctuating but unsettling symptoms: the headaches which worsened when lying down, double vision with new onset strabismus/eye misalignment, clearly unequal pupils that came and went. There was cranial nerve involvement, but not in a "you're about to die" way. So I waited. 3/6

The thing is, because I was still functioning, no one was overly concerned. I was placed on a waitlist for a neurosurgery consult. The wait ended up being more than three years. In the meantime, I saw both ophthalmology and neurology. 2/6

From a patient perspective, living in limbo between “totally fine” and in “in danger today” is a mind game, especially when your condition doesn't present how people expect. I had an insidious onset of neuro symptoms from a late decompensating congenital hydrocephalus. #medsky #mededsky 1/6
