Learn to code, they said. So I learned to code. Well enough to teach other people to code. Get a STEM degree, they said. So I got a STEM degree. A Bachelor’s isn’t enough, they said. So I got a Master’s. Almost two years, hundreds of applications, and many interviews later? Still unemployed.

Bobtail squids always look so spectacular, without fail. They are like little jewels of the sea.

A Berry's Bobtail Squid (Euprymna berryi) on the seafloor with some plants. Its skin is a translucent blue with black chromatophores and iridescent areas of cyan, green and yellow.

Having grossly underestimated the popularity of Hildegard von Bingen, I have been having trouble keeping her portrait in stock. But I pulled a new edition this morning so it’s once again available! 👩‍🔬🧪🐡 #histsci minouette.etsy.com/listing/1567...

This is my hand-printed 11" x 14" lino block print of Hildegard von Bingen (1098-1179), surrounded by plants and a mineral she touted as medical treatments, her invented alphabet and model of the universe, on lovely ivory Japanese washi paper. She is printed in dark blue on cream coloured washi paper. She is dressed in a habit holding a scroll with one of her Gregorian chants in Medieval musical notation. Her model of the universe is depicted on her habit. Clockwise from the top, she is surrounded: by tansy (Tanacetum vulgare); common comfrey (Symphytum officinale); mandrake (species in the genus Mandragora, either Mandragora officinarum or Mandragora autumnalis); sulfur; lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) and quince (Cydonia oblonga). Above and below Hildegard is the alphabet along with her own alternate alphabet Litterae ignotae which she used for her own Lingua ignota (Unknown Language).

Oh, I do a lot of abstract work, so I get you. When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with describing medium, colors, shapes/patterns, and composition. I use the default Notes app to store my written alt text. Also, now that Bsky allows you to copy alt text, it’s a little bit easier.

Artists new to Bluesky...If you want people to share your work here, get used to adding alt-text. Many if not most folks expect you to add it and if you don't they won't share your work...and some may block you. There's a require Alt-Text setting you can turn on if you need a reminder.
