Lan Zhan could make do with close. He lived 13 years without him, waiting for the miracle that would return his best friend to him. This would have to be that miracle.

In a desperate bid for closure, Lan Zhan uses AI technology to bring back his best friend, and it works... kind of. It doesn't actually work.

Wei Wuxian grimaced and clutched his head as he crumpled the spent transportation talisman in his hand and let it fall to his bedroom floor. The sound of gunfire and the alarms from the compound that housed the Jin Sect’s less than legal operations still rang in his ears.
Heart pounding, he reached under the bed for his go bag and dark fluid dripped onto the ugly, grey carpet. He wiped his nose with a trembling hand. It came back stained red.
“Fuck,” he muttered to himself, wiping the blood onto his jeans. *Good thing I didn't try to go all the way to the rendezvous point… That would've killed me!*
The black gym bag fell heavily onto the mattress, and he dug around in the front pocket for the burner Agent Xiao had given him when he first agreed to work with the Bureau of Cultivation on taking down the Jin Sect.

It hadn't yet begun to scab over, but he could feel the divot in his flesh, roughly the length of his little finger. His hand clenched into a fist and slammed into the shallow water with a splash.
The scream trapped in his chest escaped in an anguished howl, swallowed by the rush of the sea and the whistling wind.
Sitting up slowly, he gazed out at the vast expanse of water, stony grey beneath the gathering clouds. Thoughts of revenge whirled fiercely in his mind, fighting back his despair with vengeance.
Then, he saw it.
In the rocks just offshore, something resembling a human head peered at him over a large stone with a flat top washed smooth. He blinked. The head vanished, but a long, fish-like tail of pale blue dove into the water with a splash.
